Editorial Reviews

American Twilight was recorded in Detroit and includes additional members David Eugene Edwards (16 Horsepower/Woven Hand) and Jim White (Dirty Three). Simon Bonney continues to be the central member of the band. American Twilight will be Crime & the City Solution's first new album since 1990's Paradise Discotheque.

This album reflects a collective approach - comprising all the unique, and timeless qualities, from the ('84-1986) London-era (Bonney, Epic Soundtracks, Harry & Rowland Howard of The Birthday Party) releases thru the ('88-1991) Berlin-era (Bonney, Bronwyn Adams, Alexander Hacke, Thomas Stern, Mick Harvey). So it stands up to "Just South of Heaven", "Room of Lights" and every other
Crime release ( "The Adversary", "Paradise Discotheque" etc).
The fact that the Berlin line-up (with Jim white of Dirty Three, replacing Harvey on drums, and David Eugene Edwards from 16 Horsepower, joining on second guitar) surfaced last year, based in Detroit, after 20 years of silence, aroused high expectations. No one could have guessed a masterpiece like "American Twilight" would result. The songs are each meticulous works with gorgeous melodies, grand dynamics, and great musicians - with a chemistry - making a fully-formed sound (in keeping with the style and spirit of Crime).
In an age where creative enthusiasm is sorely lacking in most young groups, the return of Crime & The City Solution along with the divinely inspired, new album, "American Twilight", is a true blessing. Fans of non-genre based, innovative music
take note and you will find reward, "The Solution".

A grand sweeping masterpiece of post punk, blues, country, experimental, rock, symphony. Celebrate the fact music like this still exists, intelligent, provacative, challenging, beautiful, necessary.

The year's most welcome surprise so far. The reformation of Crime and the City Solution by original members Simon Bonney (as in former Bad Seed) and Bronwyn is a stunning work of dramatic post-industrial narrative. The album invites comparison to early Bad Seeds, as it should. As a founding member of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Bonney influence on their early sound is evident. Furthermore, Bonney shares the Bad Seeds iconography: stormy weather, fetishistic descriptions of the female form, religion, narrative forms, swirling strings, etc. With addition of Dirty Three member Jim White, their sound is a immediate as ever. A welcome addition to the Crime and the City Solution discography.

During the '80s, Crime & The City Solution featured members of The Bad Seeds and Einsturzende Neubauten. Now they've returned with David Eugene Edwards from WovenHand on guitar. Their new album, American Twilight, is great.

After 20 years off, one would be rightfully skeptical, but it truly sounds like a combination of classic City, Simon Bonney's solo albums, and WovenHand.

Definitely give it a listen if you're a fan of Nick Cave, Mark Lanegan, WovenHand, etc.
