American Twilight Album Trailer

Biography

A band out of time, Crime and the City Solution were perennial outsiders who could not rest in their native Australia, and instead found inspiration in the colder climes of London and Berlin.

Their mesmeric, expressive music evolved through two incarnations and a great deal of adversity. The first incarnation of the band appeared in 1977/78, in the midst of Australia’s nascent punk ... Read more in Amazon's Crime & The City Solution Store

Editorial Reviews

American Twilight was recorded in Detroit and includes additional members David Eugene Edwards (16 Horsepower/Woven Hand) and Jim White (Dirty Three). Simon Bonney continues to be the central member of the band. American Twilight will be Crime & the City Solution's first new album since 1990's Paradise Discotheque.

This album reflects a collective approach - comprising all the unique, and timeless qualities, from the ('84-1986) London-era (Bonney, Epic Soundtracks, Harry & Rowland Howard of The Birthday Party) releases thru the ('88-1991) Berlin-era (Bonney, Bronwyn Adams, Alexander Hacke, Thomas Stern, Mick Harvey). So it stands up to "Just South of Heaven", "Room of Lights" and every other
Crime release ( "The Adversary", "Paradise Discotheque" etc).
The fact that the Berlin line-up (with Jim white of Dirty Three, replacing Harvey on drums, and David Eugene Edwards from 16 Horsepower, joining on second guitar) surfaced last year, based in Detroit, after 20 years of silence, aroused high expectations. No one could have guessed a masterpiece like "American Twilight" would result. The songs are each meticulous works with gorgeous melodies, grand dynamics, and great musicians - with a chemistry - making a fully-formed sound (in keeping with the style and spirit of Crime).
In an age where creative enthusiasm is sorely lacking in most young groups, the return of Crime & The City Solution along with the divinely inspired, new album, "American Twilight", is a true blessing. Fans of non-genre based, innovative music
take note and you will find reward, "The Solution".

It is great to have these guys back and look forward to more in the future.

As for this album, I like their old stuff better than their new stuff, with their old stuff being more epic with a greater sense of journey, space and shades. While there are touches of the Bride Ship, Steal to Sea, The Brother Song and Shine - particularly the title track - none go the required distance for my liking.

My first listening evoked a sense of loss for the late Rowland S Howard. Rowland gave crime's early incarnations that awesome sense of whatever they had. I dusted off Rowland's last album, Pop Crimes, from a few years back as comparison on albums by middle aged rocksters in this genre. Rowland S wins by far. Rowland seemed to live in that poetic visceral world of the unsigned which he presented to us in the form of music, poetry and performance. In contrast, this album seems more about comfortable middle-age seeking to re-enter the poetic world through music. But I can't complain, I'm no pauper, and too of those comfortable ones where the new world is king.

Perhaps it is too much to expect people to abandon their wives, children, posessions and saving to enable a drug fuelled lifestyle in the poetic world just to give us beautiful music. The money is just not there anymore, and don't talk to me about luck.

I hope that they make some haste and summon up some speed so that we do not need to wait so long for the next offering, I look forward to it.

This is a good album and I recommend it.

Arising from Detroit via Berlin via Melbourne, Australia, C&TCS release their 6th album since
1985 and their first in over 20 years. The band plays dark, anthemic, mid-tempo rockers with a
big, rolling, dramatic flair led by the strong baritone vocals of Simon Bonney. Having eight
members in the group gives the songs a full, epic presence and a warm, driving power that
accentuates the sweeping, haunted grandeur of the material. Members have played in Dirty
Three, 16 Horsepower, Witches, Dirtbombs, Outrageous Cherry, Einsturzende Neubauten.
Reminiscent of Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds, the Triffids, the Wreckery, And Also The Trees,
Leonard Cohen.
