3.0 out of 5 stars Definitely worth getting, but not the best Corsair documentary., November 9, 2007

This review is from: American War Eagles: F4U Corsair - Thunder From the Skies (DVD)
I wasn't expecting much to be honest, and was pleasantly surprised.

The background music, specially the opening parts is just awful. Once you get over that the narrative (by a person with a New Zealand accent) is quite interesting and informative enough. It's not heavy on facts, just general info with enough detail to avoid getting bored. It's got the right combination of flying a restored aircraft vs. original WWII footage. There is some b&w footage I had never seen before that is impressive. Good to see a Corsair actually moving around those coconut bordered impromptu bases like you see in photographs.

There is no reanactment, which tends to be mediocre. Glad they didn't even try. There is some coverage of Corsairs in British and RAAF/RNZAF service. Korean War is also included.

Overall quality of the image leaves something to be desired, colors bleed over, doesn't look like a digital recording at all, probably because the original is older than such technology. The WWII stuff is quite acceptable, though.

In closing, worth up to $10, but not much more. If you are a F4U fan you won't regret buying it, although there are better documentaries, such as the 3-DVD item from Aircraft Films, Inc.
