"American Wars And Heroes" by Maurice Matloff is a readable account of the major wars in US history:

1. American Revolution
2. War of 1812
3. Mexican War
4. Civil War
5. Spanish-American War
6. World War 1
7. World War 2
8. Korean War
9. Vietnam War

In each section, the author summarizes the actions leading up to each war, America's involvement and casualties suffered, major engagements and leaders, and results. The book is very readable and a good title for anyone wanting to gain a basic knowledge of each war.
