Katie Crutchfield is a natural writer of hyper-personal, heart-wrenching songs. Since picking up guitar as a teenager, with an assortment of melodic punk bands and solo songwriting projects, she’s demonstrated a gift for eloquently articulating the sorts of complex emotions that typically seem too confusing for words. Last year, Crutchfield released her debut full-length album under the ... Read more in Amazon's Waxahatchee Store

Editorial Reviews

These songs were written and recorded the week of January 4th, 2011, as a result of a snowstorm, a visceral stupor and a personal breakthrough -- Alabama native Katie Crutchfield-- twin sister of Swearin's Allison Crutchfield-- writes in the liner notes of American Weekend, her piercing debut as Waxahatchee. Crutchfield builds her songs from humble materials-- usually just an acoustic guitar and her sweet, faintly cigarette-cracked lilt-- but they've got an emotional directness that imbues them with huge power. American Weekend has the unvarnished texture of an early, lo-fi Mountain Goats record and the lonely, confessional feel of Liz Phair's self-recorded Girlysound tapes. I don't care, I'll embrace all of my vices, Crutchfield sings on Grass Stain, poignant but defiant. These songs have the resonant urgency of a voice coming from the bottom of a well, its owner not so much calling for help but instead trying to see how far the echo will travel. American Weekend is a record about late nights, sharp hangovers, fumbled relationships-- a record about being young. (Perhaps the album's best line: I don't care if I'm too young to be unhappy). Crutchfield's a uniquely talented lyricist who's able to find the feelings in ordinary moments (Barefoot parking lot, getting high in Portland, Oregon) and make the particular feel universal. --Lindsay Zoladz /

Product Description

The bad news is that P.S. ELLIOT have called it a day (though you still have a chance to catch them a couple more times). The good news is that from the ashes of that Alabama band rises the now-Brooklyn-based WAXAHATCHEE, otherwise known as KATIE CRUTCHFIELD who uses 'just guitar, her voice, and a piano to tell stories.' Her debut solo album, entitled American Weekend, will see the light of day on January 10th via Don Giovanni Records who say 'the record is a product of a wintry week in Alabama, literally. The 11 songs were recorded in a span of seven days on an 8-track recorder

5.0 out of 5 stars LoFi Brilliance. Best album of 2012 September 24, 2012
Format:MP3 Music
Not sure where to start, other than to say just listen to BATHTUB, if if doesn't give you chills then visit a doctor quickly, or go back to Kiss Me Maybe. This is the most heart wrenching record I've heard in many a year. Chilling and brilliant and so perfectly produced. This is Dylan in 1963. This is the flip side of the first Replacements single in 1981. It makes me want to cry and scream from rooftops all at the same time. Freaking brilliant. Just buy it, listen, live, feel the raw brutal truth.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great songs from a great talent December 5, 2012
By grip
Format:MP3 Music
Heartfelt songs with sophisticated lyrics beyond her years.

"We stick to our slow motion memory
Its 1 in the morning and 90 degrees
And though now it is hovering darkly over me
It'll look just like heaven when i get up and leave
You're a ghost and i can't breathe"

Slower tempo than the songs she recorded with P.S. Eliot but the lyrics and melodies are just as compelling, if not more so. I give it four stars because it's a little too lo-fi for my taste but this is my favorite album of 2012.

The P.S. Eliot recordings are not available on Amazon but they're worth checking out, particularly the second album "Sadie". She has a newer album she recorded with Keith Spencer called "sounds of Great Thunder" available at Bandcamp. Katie Crutchfield is a talent to watch.

The P.S. Eliot recordings are now available on Amazon.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing Folk Debut August 6, 2013
Format:MP3 Music|Verified Purchase
It is hard to believe that she recorded this album at her parents' house one weekend. The lyrics are so deep and cutting. You can feel a lifetime of experience in her voice. This is one album you can play over and over and over again without tiring of a single track.

This album has ranges from chaotic and uncontrolled serenading to sweet longing all with only one voice and a single instrument. This album is amazing, and any fan of unplugged singers could find something they would like in it.
