Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 4-7-Utilizing a layout similar to DK titles, Hatt presents an extremely broad overview of the arrival of "non-Native Americans in the West." The book consists of four temporal sections each containing two-page chapters exploring such subjects as "The Louisiana Purchase," "Indian Removal," the Gold Rush, and a settler's daily life. The ambitious scope paired with the brevity of discussion results in a choppy narrative. Photographs (including one of Jesse James in his coffin), maps, original documents, and charts provide useful additional information. For example, when discussing Native Americans, the author supports her point with an excerpt from an original statement to demonstrate President Jackson's abhorrent treatment of them. Hatt recognizes the lack of representation of the lives of minorities in films but fails to develop a full-length discussion regarding their circumstances and opportunities. A visually strong work that is somewhat limited by its abbreviated text.

This review is from: The American West: Native Americans, Pioneers and Settlers (History in Writing) (Hardcover)
I teach a Western Literature Class, which is supposed to encompass the westward expansion into the North American continent. I found this book to a be a good outline for further research on subjects that applied to my class.
