Book Description

June 30, 2006

American Whitetail Deer Hunting Tips and Resources is a "how to" book to help the new, young and inexperienced deer hunters as well as veteran hunters develop or further their education on hunting the whitetail deer. You can never stop learning about the whitetail deer regardless of how experienced, as a deer hunter you may be. There are many hunters who actually deer hunt a great deal but are fairly unsuccessful in their efforts. This book took over six years of actual research and writing, and 35 years of deer hunting experience to create. What makes the information in my book so valuable to most hunters, is the fact that it is based on hunting the whitetail deer on primarily wild, unmanaged, local area timber and farm land. This is basically the same type of deer hunting that most hunters confront each and every year. The deer are not dependent on man for their quality of life as they are on many large whitetail deer ranches where your success rate goes up considerably. While strongly advocating good hunting ethics, and family involvement, this book is packed full of valuable information and tips, pictures, and illustrations to help hunters become consistently successful each and every year. Whether you are young, elderly, male, female, regardless of nationality, or skin color, we all face the same challenges when deer hunting.

The whitetail deer of North America is one of the most illusive and cunning creatures to harvest consistently year after year. The hunter must first become knowledgeable of the animals strengths and weaknesses, his habits, food sources, body language, rutting/mating habits, senses, vocal sounds, habitat, predators, etc. in order to match wits with him. This book covers all of these things in depth plus much more. Learn everything from included packing lists to how to prepare your venison for the table. You will become familiar with hunting strategies and tactics, selecting a stand location and how best to set up to hunt, how to still hunt, stalk, and track deer, how to deal with the scent problem and the ever changing wind. Become aware of deer in your hunting area that you didn't even know were there, totally undisturbed in their natural habitat, with the use of night vision cameras. Discover the importance and value of good shot placement, and how to retrieve and/or track your deer after he has been wounded or harvested. The field dressing, skinning, butchering, and packaging process for the freezer is an absolute necessity for each and every deer hunter. Educate yourself on how to rough score your buck to determine if he is a contender for the Boone & Crockett, or Pope & Young clubs record book. You will be able to age your deer using the most accurate method, the jaw bone tooth chart method. As a bonus, you will receive over twenty-five great venison recipes, and hundreds of whitetail deer hunting and other related web site addresses in the last two chapters.

American Whitetail Deer Hunting Tips and Resources will become an actual tool for each and every deer hunt you go on. It should be at the top of your packing list and will serve as an excellent reference guide for your trip. You will find the lengthy list of web sites in the back invaluable on many occasions. Refer to them for moon phases, weather conditions, sun rise and set information, available leases in your area, your state hunting forecast, requirements, and results, etc. Refer to the illustrations and charts on food sources, and how to recognize them, tracking your wounded deer and how to determine how severely he was hit, in order to determine how far he may go before you may recover him. Learn from photographs included in the book, how to recognize poisonous snakes, spiders, ticks, and all about Lyme disease, and what to do in the event of a poisonous bite situation. Whitetail deer hunters will appreciate the convenience of having the information found in this book readily available to them in one source. It is my sincere belief and hope that this book will not only make you a better deer hunter, but also help create stronger bonds between hunting companions, particularly between parents and their young hunters.

American Whitetail Deer Hunting Tips and Resources is the most informative book on the American Whitetail I have read in years. From the field to the freezer, Terry Townsend captures every aspect of the sport we love. His love of the hunt and his respect for the animal and its' environment is unmistakable. I use to say all you needed on a hunt were the three B's: Binoculars, Bullets, and Brains. I now make it the four B's: Binoculars, Bullets, Brains, and this Book.

About the Author

Having spent the youth of my life in a small community called Only, Tennessee, where my parents lived at the time I was born, I received a valuable foundation block for my life. I knew that I would always prefer and try to remain as close to my roots as possible. The simple, down to earth, honest to goodness country way of life, would always be me at heart. My love for the outdoors and deer hunting stems from these early years I spent in Only, Tennessee.

My favorite place in the entire world to be is in the deep woods of Tennessee, whitetail deer hunting. Over the years, I have spent thousands of hours in the woods, scouting, tracking and observing, photographing, hunting, and harvesting whitetail deer. Over the years, I have endured all types of weather in order to be out there when the deer were active. When you spend a great deal of time doing anything, you naturally will get good at it if you apply what you learn. You will get even better at it if you truly love to do it. This is the way I feel about whitetail deer hunting and why I feel qualified to write this book. I have taken some nice racked bucks over the years, and for probably the last 30 of those, as many deer for the freezer as I needed.

Whitetail deer hunting has been my passion for the last 35 years, and this book for the last six. I'm not a "know it all" type of person by any means, but I have all these years of valuable whitetail deer information, based on experience and research, to share with you. What makes my background of information valuable to most deer hunter's, is that it is based on whitetail deer hunting on open, primarily unmanaged land or local area timber and farm land. These are the types of hunts that most of us hunters experience every year. It takes dedication, patience, a certain amount of drive and determination, knowledge, and oh yes, a certain amount of luck at being in the right place at the right time. Hunting the whitetail deer is not as easy as it use to be because they have become wise to many of our tactics. To be able to hunt on a deer ranch where the deer are dependent on these land owners for their quality of life, would be an out of the ordinary situation for me, and naturally is not as difficult to be successful.

I will feel a great since of accomplishment if this book helps hunters become more productive, as I believe it will. It is my ultimate desire that this book will not only enlighten our young hunters, but also bring them closer to their parents or other role models through deer hunting. This in turn will help create a stronger

Author Terry Townsend has done a superb job in writing "American Whitetail - Deer Hunting Tips & Resources" (A++++). This soft cover book is 486 pages and a real bargain for the price. I own 20+ deer hunting book, and this one ranks in my Top 3 Best Books. This is truly a comprehensive reference book on deer hunting - it's covers all of the basic fundamentals, such as: pre-season scouting, food sources, scrapes & rubs, the Rut, tracking, deer habits, hunting strategies, dealing with scent control, proper stand placement & setup, understanding the effects of wind direction, still-hunting tactics, stalking tactics, deer drives, deer calls, deer rattling, selection of basic hunting equipment, field dressing & butchering your deer, and many more topics. It is written in a very reader friendly format in short sections so you don't feel like you're reading a novel. It's my favoite book to read when I'm on the crapper - what more can I say! Whether you are a rookie or seasoned deer hunter, you'll find this book very informative and fun to read - and keep - as a reference book. For a one book deer hunting reference guide, Townsend did a FANTASTIC job putting this guide booktogether!!!

This review is from: American Whitetail Deer Hunting Tips and Resources (Paperback)
Sadly, I didn't have the patience to even try to read this book: it was printed on pages which featured a leafy background, making the text difficult to read. Hard to describe, since I've never seen anything like it. It's not the sort of thing to invite browsing. I sent it back and ordered other guides.
