Book Description

May 1, 2005
In November 2003, musician and photographer Bryan Adams began photographing a cross section of influential American women dressed in Calvin Klein. Shot mainly in New York and Los Angeles throughout 2004, American Women is a tribute to the beauty, strength, and character of American women. Actors, journalists, musicians, artists, businesswomen, athletes, and philanthropists are included—the binding theme being that they are all American women known for excelling in their field. Proceeds from American Women will support breast cancer research programs at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center through The Society of MSKCC.

Hillary Rodham Clinton, Katie Couric, Jennifer Aniston, Gwyneth Paltrow, Scarlett Johansson, Hilary Swank, Serena Williams, Venus Williams, Lindsay Lohan, Christie Brinkley, Sarah Jessica Parker, Eartha Kitt, Aerin Lauder Zinterhofer, Nan Kempner, Paula Zahn, Cindy Crawford, Alice Sebold, Amber Valletta, Katie Holmes, Eve Ensler, and Lauren Hutton are just a few of the women Adams selected from among America's most notable women, all lovingly and glamorously captured by the camera of a rising star in the field.

Produced in close collaboration with Calvin Klein, Inc., American Women is Adams' third book presenting portraits of important women. His first, Made in Canada (Key Porter, 1999), benefited the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation and featured influential Canadian women such as Linda Evangelista, k.d. lang, Shania Twain, and Pamela Anderson. Based on its success, he published a second book, Haven (2000), to benefit the Haven Trust, a breast cancer support center in London. The book raised a considerable sum for the charity and received widespread press. For that book, Bryan photographed HRH Queen Elizabeth II, the Duchess of York, Vanessa Redgrave, Elizabeth Hurley, Kate Moss, Julie Christie, Joan Collins, and forty other influential British women.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Calvin dresses them; Bryan takes their pictures. Ranging through New York and L.A. over much of 2004, Adams set up a plethora of shoots of famous women wearing Klein's clothes, with proceeds from book and photos going to breast cancer research programs at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York. Scarlett Johansson leads off; Cindy Crawford, Paula Zahn, Sarah Jessica Parker, Gwyneth Paltrow, Lauren Bush, Nia Long, Liz Smith, Hilary Rodham Clinton and 82 others follow. Since Adams seems to be after the glowy, stripped down wattage of the staged b&w magazine celeb shot, the photos are not always inspiring, but they are all lovely and competent. Some are full-page bleeds or spreads; others are centered or off-set; most focus on the faces of the famous, rather than on Klein's austerely classic designs, which seem to take second place here.

5.0 out of 5 stars Benefits women, Sloan-Kettering cancer research, July 30, 2005
This review is from: American Women (Hardcover)
Bryan Adams (Summer of 69, Have You Ever Really Loved A Woman) lost someone close to him to breast cancer and decided to become a force in raising money to combat the disease. Having already published two books on women in the UK and Canada, Adams turns his attention to the U.S and dedicates the profits of "American Women" to the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York. That effort alone earns it all the stars in the sky. This is a very talented artist who is more famous for his music than photography. You won't find any award winning photography between these pages but that wasn't the point. I believe the point was to focus on women, their strength, beauty and their value. Bryan Adams has accomplished that with a touch of class. "American Women" is worth every penny, especially if "You Ever Really Loved a Woman."
