Comprehensive journal of the British commander in chief,

For those interested in the American Revolution, and in particular British strategy, this is the best primary source available from the British side. Clinton served in the war all the way from Bunker Hill past Yorktown, first as Howe's second in command and then as commander in chief. Despite his primary motivation in writing it (to acquit himself of responsibility for the Yorktown disaster), he details a competent view of the war and the strategic considerations he faced. More relevant is the lengthy appendix of documents included in the second half, all from his huge collection of sources that he was obsessed with saving.
Bottom line: Best primary source on the war from a British command officer. |
