Editorial Reviews

Sono Luminus presents this uniquely engaging collection of music that embodies the American spirit in Americana, the latest release by the Modern Mandolin Quartet. The package includes a 2 disc set, with a Blu Ray Audio disc and a standard CD. The Modern Mandolin Quartet was formed in 1985 to give a new voice to that most American of musical instruments, the mandolin.

This is the first release by this Virginia-based quartet that I've heard - though reviews of their earlier releases on Amazon have been very positive. Like some other musicians I have discovered (Jake Shimabukuro on ukulele and Ronn MacFarlane on lute) these guys have taken the simple 4-string folk instrument to new places.

This 70-minute-plus album covers wide ground from Aaron Copeland's "Hoedown" to Bernstein's "Cool" (from "West Side Story") and even includes the "Americana" composition from Anton Dvorak the "American" String Quartet. The inclusion of Philip Glass's score for the film "Mishima" and a Bill Monroe Medley are different in structure but, surprisingly, not out of place. The four "pluckers" even take on the (usually piano-only) Gershwin "Piano Preludes".

The package comes with TWO CDs but most folks will only be able to play one. That's because, in addition at a standard audio CD, there is a Bluray AUDIO CD as well. You can't play that in you your Bluray VIDEO player (that you use for DVDs). You need a special BD audio player. But if you have one (I don't) I'm sure the sound will be even better. For me the standard CD played well.

The 12 page booklet inset has 3 pages of notes on the music and lots of photos.

If you like these guys, check out Jake and Ronn (noted above) too.

I hope this review was both informative and helpful.

5.0 out of 5 stars Let Me Correct That October 14, 2012
By John R
Format:Blu-ray Audio|Verified Purchase
The previous two reviews have covered the music and the performances, both of which are thoroughly enjoyable. Please be aware, however, that contrary to what the first reviewer states, Blu Ray audio discs play on ANY Blu Ray player. An on-screen menu offers the listener a choice of 7.1, 5.1, or stereo audio playback. I can tell you that the 5.1 mix creates the illusion that the quartet members are seated in the four corners of the room, "surrounding" the listener. The value of this is in aiding the ear to grasp who is playing what, in terms of counterpoint and harmony.

The old and obsolete "DVD Audio" format did, indeed, not play on regular DVD players, and this is recognized as a huge marketing mistake. The purveyors of Blu Ray audio did not repeat that error. Blu Ray audio is a very high quality format that played through a high quality system produces a fabulous result.

AMERICANA - Modern Mandolin Quartet - Sono Luminus

The term "Americana" has been used for everything from the title for a Don DeLillo novel to a radio marketing term for otherwise uncategorizable singer-songwriters.
In their latest recording, the Modern Mandolin Quartet propose their own definition and continue their successful blending of the familiar and the unexpected. Their performances of the folk melody, "Shenandoah" and the "Irish Roots Medley" (as well as the live concert favorite, "Bill Monroe Medley") speak to their knowledge of `home-grown' American music, while their arrangements of Aaron Copland's "Hoedown" and the previously recorded "Cool" by Leonard Bernstein seem to make even these modern `standards' more accessible.
However, the real strength of this record lies in their rendering of Dvorak's "American" string quartet (No. 12 in F, Op. 96) and "String Quartet No. 3" by Phillip Glass, both played with the taste and timing, dexterity and dynamics one has come to expect from this group. George Gershwin's "Three Piano Preludes", like the Glass composition, further allow them to exhibit that rarest of all musical qualities and the one sure sign of genuine virtuosity, imagination.
From folk songs to film scores, "Americana" by the Modern Mandolin Quartet proves, once again, the depth and diversity of American music and demonstrates the truth of the old adage that good musicians may play music well, but great musicians bring it to life.

Highest possible recommendation 10 out of 10 Oscar O. Veterano

Masterful musicians all, showing an ability to play in several traditions. It was great tp hear the interpretation of Copland, the fun they had with Bernstein, and how they made Glass finally worth listening to. No wonder this was nominated for a Grammy!

Well deserved guys!
