I have no idea who makes this hat, where it comes from, or anything like that. I do know that it and its replica Confederate counterpart are available at just about every Civil War museum in existence- I got the Union cap I have at Tredegar Iron Works. Being based off the official government-issue cap that Union enlisted men wore- few, if any, officers wore caps like this- this hat is an excellent replica and a good hat besides. I made extensive use of it in airsoft matches, combined with blue jeans and a blue sweater. When carrying a CM-42 airsoft rifle, I looked like something out of "Guns of the South". Guns of the North in this case, I guess.

The uses and applications of this hat and its Confederate counterpart are legion. History projects, airsoft matches, reenactments, on the list goes. The only letdown this hat has- a flaw that applies to the gray cap, as well- is the pair of crossed rifles on the front. They are cheap and unimpressive from the start, and given the flimsly means by which the pin is attached, will fall off and probably be lost soon enough. I instead bought a wreathed "US" pin to replace the rifles, and you know what? I liked it so much better that way I took the rifles off the Confederate cap I had early, installing a similar wreathed "CSA" pin. Those pins can be bought on eBay for certain, and believe me, they look a whole lot better than the crossed rifles.

Overall, a solid and thoroughly enjoyable and educational Civil War item. If you're looking for something in this field, I highly recommend it.

This is a good quality item for the price. No worries buying it - it fit our child's head as expected. Buy a couple for each side so all the kids can play! (When my son opened this he was hoping he was getting a full uniform. Too bad they don't make a uniform. We were sure to buy him the Civil War Musket replica cap gun.)
