5.0 out of 5 stars Read it if you are a minority!!
Mr Sosa has a brilliant message. You can succeed even though you may belong to a minority or 'disadvantaged'. Although, he shares the Latinos' experiance and the Americano dream, his story is applicable to anyone who has persistence and determination to succeed. 1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
The book follows the typical self-help recipes: positive attitude, self-appreciation, hard work, etc. But it starts flopping when it attempts to bind those recipes with sociocultural subjects.

For example: the Spanish spoken in certain regions is, according to Mr. Sosa, inherently servile (by the way, not so with English or Portuguese????).

Negative behaviors, he...

This review is from: The Americano Dream: How Latinos Can Achieve Success in Business and in Life (Hardcover)
When I started to read this book I knew right away that this man had the answers I was searching for. He is on target with what it takes to make it the present US economy. I not only gained knowledge, I gained pride in my culture. I highly recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A breakaway from the traditional Hispanic mentality!!, July 1, 1999
This review is from: The Americano Dream: How Latinos Can Achieve Success in Business and in Life (Hardcover)
An insightful book that brings to surface the traits and characters of Hispanics that are detrimental in some respects but an asset in other situations. Mr. Sosa voices the ever-increasing philosphy of the Hispanic that wants to succeed in business as any other Anglo strives to succeed. Finally a book that expresses what I have always believed. A 'MUST' read for any Latino who wants to understand why he believes and thinks different than their "madre" and/or "padre".

5.0 out of 5 stars A PASSIONATE BOOK WITH A GREAT MESSAGE FOR ALL HISPANICS, June 22, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: The Americano Dream: How Latinos Can Achieve Success in Business and in Life (Hardcover)
MR. SOSA DOES A WONDERFUL JOB TELLING THE READER ABOUT THE OBSTACLES(FOR THE MOST PART CULTURAL)THAT HE HAD TO OVERCOME TO FEEL A SENSE OF EQUALITY AND A RIGHT TO ACHIEVE GREATNESS IN AMERICA; SOMETHING ANY ONE CAN DO NO MATTER WHAT YOUR NATIONALITY IS ACCORDING TO HIM. OVER ALL, I STRONGLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK TO ANY ONE WHO HAS AT ONE POINT IN TIME FELT DISADVANTAGED DUE TO LANGUAGE OR CULTURAL BARRIERS. THIS IS A MUST READ BOOK!

4.0 out of 5 stars A MUST IF YOU ARE A HISPANIC AND WANT TO SUCCEED OR IF YOU WANT TO UNDERSTAND HOW TO UNDERSTAND AND HELP HISPANICS SUCCEED, January 26, 2012
By
Someone shared this book with me and I initially only started reading it because I felt obligated to. Boy am I glad I did!!!! This has changed our lives. Lionel goes deep into analyzing the sources of a lot of the mistakes that we commit in business that lead so many of us to either flounder or to reach a plateau in our success. He hits it dead on when he talks about the root of a lot of the "shakles" that inhibit us as Hispanics. He also talks about the many and great strengths that we share and talks about how to make the most of those to help us in our quest for the American Dream. I didn't give it all five stars because some of his usage of Spanish/Mexican expressions in the book got on my nerves at times, but I got over them because the content of the book is very objective and it can be life changing!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Book! Another Mexicano on the rags to riches climb., October 7, 2008
By
Great book on the dot on many subjects but also didn't agree with all the hidden/imposed, father/superior believes and reasoning for all our actions. A must to help understand ourselves better and acknowledge and address the problems we do have. So far the best business/cultural mixed book with actual help and facts and not just motivational speech and idioms.

5.0 out of 5 stars Latino Success Story, December 21, 2005
This review is from: The Americano Dream: How Latinos Can Achieve Success in Business and in Life (Hardcover)
The author worked his way up from a poverty-stricken childhood in San Antonio to become an advertising executive in the upper echelons of the business world. Henry Cisneros felt the book "captures the essence of being Latino in the U.S. today. It is a book that will touch many people deeply".

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent advice from Lionel Sosa., March 19, 1999
By A Customer
I feel this book should be mandatory reading for anyone interested in starting a business or climbing the corporate ladder. The book has flexible advice in the sense that it not only applies to Hispanics, but to Anglos, Asians, African-Americans, etc. I enjoyed this book and I have told family and friends about this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gutsy insight into the Latino psyche, March 28, 1998

amorcitos (Colorado Springs, CO) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Americano Dream: How Latinos Can Achieve Success in Business and in Life (Hardcover)

Mr. Sosa's book was such a joy to read and impossible to put down.To boot, there's nothing out there quite like it.

Bold! Bolder! Boldest!
What's most impressive is Sosa's boldness in talking about the "unspoken" mindset and tendencies of the Latino experience, especially as it relates to our growing presence in the American workplace.

My emotional experience.
At moments taking offense, I was quickly compelled to examine myself, realizing that at least in my case, Sosa was right on target and that I too had *certain* tendencies in my thinking and sense of self-worth, even though I am a 2nd generation U.S. Hispanic and well assimilated.

How it reads.
It is a gift to put down on paper one's emotional and spiritual experiences and find how interdependent they are. Rather than alienate the reader with over-the-head, academic delivery, Sosa's conversational, old-friend style sprinkled with Spanish words and dichos (sayings) make the reader feel muy en casa (right at home) and get right to the heart of the matter with good timing.

Ahora si!
Let this be a challenge to other prominent Latinos, as well as to the Hispanic media, to *freely* share the experiences of *all* Latinos--well-known and otherwise--in print and electronic media so that both we and our children are moved to act on our futures--ahora mismo (right now)! We have so much to gain and even more to share.

5.0 out of 5 stars An "open door" to how to succeed in business and life!, March 18, 1998
This review is from: The Americano Dream: How Latinos Can Achieve Success in Business and in Life (Hardcover)
This is not only a "business" history lesson on the fastest growing population segment in the US - it is a lesson on how we all can enjoy the fruits of our labor through self motivation, taking the ultimate risks (and never looking back), careful introspection of our roots, learning from parental guidance and accepting the thrill of every victory, day-by-day. You don't have to be Latino to appreciate Lionel's thrill in living everyday as the most important day in his (and his family's) life.
