Amazon.com Review
Written with the traveling family in mind, this guide to historic sites spans the United States, from Fort Vancouver in Washington State to St. Augustine in Florida. For each of the 101 sites, there are clear and accurate instructions on how to get there (a little detail appreciated by parents with kids in tow), a summary of the relevant history, entrance fees, and hours of operation, plus information on what aspects of the site have proven most popular with children. The authors include tips on what's nearby as far as food and accommodations go, and what else there is of interest in the area. A useful blend of family-relevant detail and historic instruction, this is the guide to bring if you're hoping your brood might actually learn from
and enjoy your next family vacation.

For people who love to travel and see the historic sites of this country, this is an essential guide. Welborn, a contributor to such publications as the Charlotte Observer and the Acton Guide, has put together an excellent and easy-to-use work for family travelers. In today's theme park society, education on a family trip may not seem cool. However, Welborn gives information that the entire family might find interesting at these attractions. The book is divided geographically, first by region, then by state, and gives a number of sites to visit. Each site is described fully, with directions on how to get there, significance, information about its characteristics, and other important data. The author also gives "hot tips," e.g., how long one should plan on visiting the site, which is very useful. Each site also has a section on "the best stuff" to do and other interests in the area. There are two appendixes, "Top Ten Sites" and "Top Ten Hidden Jewels," both of which are indispensable and include such locations as Crazy Horse Memorial (SD) and Edison's Laboratory (NJ). An excellent addition to any public library.AMelisa Fiumara, North Tonawanda P.L., Buffalo, NY
