4.0 out of 5 stars Taxes are important in considering where to live.
This does show the importance of state and local taxes with communities varying over a factor of two in the tax load. Since that could mean the difference between 6% and 12% of my income, it is an important consideration.

I bought this book based on the reviews. Big mistake. I am not a CPA, but for the last several years I have been researching the overall tax situation for all US states. When reviewing this book I wondered if the calculations were done correctly. For example PA is ranked very low. Meaning it is not a very desirable place to live for retirees based on this book. I don't...

This does show the importance of state and local taxes with communities varying over a factor of two in the tax load. Since that could mean the difference between 6% and 12% of my income, it is an important consideration.

It could use some simple comparison tables for the various types of taxes along with some maps showing the approximate location of the communities.

It is missing many of the other factors that need to be considered before deciding where to live such as climate, crime, and housing cost.

I love the data and insight! Great tool if you want to investigate a variety of potential locations. I use it along side of my new copy of "Cities Ranked & Rated". Next to actually living there, it may be the best source of information and insight. Try their magazine, "Retire Here", for a regular infusion of inspiration and real estate ads.

Yet there may many local taxes, for cities within that state.
Very informative.

I don't agree and I don't live there. PA has a waiver on state income taxes for retirees on their retirement accounts even those coming from other states. Also, regarding their property taxes, which has been assessed using the original price of the home when it was built not current value. This can be very beneficial for those owning an older home. I could go on with other states that I wonder if they figured in the right numbers. When the book arrived and after looking at it for about 15 minutes I wanted to send it back and/or call the authors to ask them some questions. Very disappointing. I realize others have given this book high marks. I am wondering if they tried to verify the stats in this book. If you buy this book please verify the information before you move to a state mentioned.

Excellently presented information of a very important subject. Tired of high income, real estate, and sales taxes, we have decided that low taxes are a very important part of our check-list for retirement. This book was a very good buy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Information for Retirement Planning, February 28, 2009
This review is from: America's Best Low-Tax Retirement Towns, 3rd Edition: Where to Move to, and From, to Slash Your Taxes in Retirement! (America's Best Low-Tax Retirement Towns: Where to Move to from to) (Paperback)
This book really opened my eyes to how drastically different each state is regarding taxes in all areas. I always new that my state had a high tax rate on everything, but this book confirmed that I live in a "tax hell"! I plan to leave my state at first opportunity and definitely will not retire here.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good useful Info, May 5, 2009
This review is from: America's Best Low-Tax Retirement Towns, 3rd Edition: Where to Move to, and From, to Slash Your Taxes in Retirement! (America's Best Low-Tax Retirement Towns: Where to Move to from to) (Paperback)
This book is useful in making a comparison of hidden costs when moving from one location to another. For those thinking of retiring or relocating to a state that has no income tax it is definitely a useful tool to get a better analysis. In general, I would recommend this book as a good reference source.

I've read this book from cover to cover and it does give you statistics of what the tax percentages are in each state but fails to mention any other areas of interest retires consider before making a move. There are too many assumptions and now, four years after publication, all the info is outdated. Don't bother buying this book. The economy has changed drastically and I'd bet none of the info is correct any longer.

The seller got the book to me quickly and is very reputable. The book was in better condition than I expected. Thank you.

Good book that is a great place to start, but I wouldn't take what they say as totally right. Check out their information as tax laws change every year it seems. However, for those starting a search, this is an excellent resource to us.

This very important book is easy to read, very well researched and of great importance to retiring seniors. Everyone near the age of retirement should buy and read this book. It has been of great help to myself and my husband as we try to decide which state has the least tax burden on retirees.
