Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
Since America's Volume Dealer sounds a lot like alternative metal, the unfamiliar might think they're bandwagon jumpers. But COC were among the first to explore the myriad connections between metal and punk/hardcore when they opened for thrash acts in the heyday of the '80s metal underground. But since likeminded (albeit more commercial) bands like Soundgarden and Faith No More have come and gone, perhaps COC's day has finally come. In fact, America's Volume Dealer is an incredibly high-quality piece of work that exhibits range, musicianship, and confidence. If they occasionally sound a bit like Alice in Chains, remember this: Corrosion of Conformity helped create that sound. --Genevieve Williams

3.0 out of 5 stars Not C.O.C.'s best, but hardly they're worst, September 13, 2002
By N. Durham "Big Evil" (Philadelphia, PA) - See all my reviews
(TOP 50 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
I can understand a bit why some people are calling C.O.C. sell outs, but then again sometimes I think those people saying that are insane. Corrosion of Conformity have and never will sell out for any reason, and while "America's Volume Dealer" isn't C.O.C.'s best work by any means, it is also not a bad album by any means either. They still have they're southern fried groove on "Zippo", "Doublewide", "Diablo Blvd.", and "Congratulations Song", but other tracks like "Gittin' It On" and "Take What You Want" sound a bit like filler material. "Stare Too Long" is the album highlight here, which guest stars Warren Haynes from Gov't Mule. The bottom line here is that C.O.C. still rocks and still kicks it, it is a shame however that they hardly get the recognition they deserve. If you just started getting into C.O.C. or want to, start with "Deliverance" and "Wiseblood" if you like groove oriented heavy music, or you can go with they're older "Blind" for a much more heavier experience, then you can make your own decision with "America's Volume Dealer".

3.0 out of 5 stars Good, but not as good as I wanted., March 16, 2004
I've heard about "COC" for so long, I finally decided to get an album. Though this is good, I expected them to be heavier. This sounds like "Metallica/Nickelback", and I was hoping for "Kyuss/Soundgarden". Maybe it's just this album, and not them. But still, this is good, and it does qualify as metal/hard rock. Big fans probably should pick this up, newcomers might want to get one of their other albums, I suspect they might be better. I just wish the music was as cool as the album title and cover.

5.0 out of 5 stars COC 'll get over you, March 4, 2001
By Carlos De Manuel (Curitiba, PR Brasil) - See all my reviews
4 years after the dissapointing 'Wiseblood' and 6 since the release of the masterpiece 'Deliverance', COC presents us with "America's Volume Dealer', arguably the band's best work to date.

'Over Me', the opening cut, just grabs you by the guts from the very first riff. And from the Skynyrdesque 'Stare too long' to the crunchy 'Take what you want' the band exhales naturally what lacks on most bands today (king's x aside): honesty and feeling.

More good news: the guys have defenitely abandoned the political [stuff] on their lyrics, wich are again superb. This might be a reflection of the band's maturity, when you realize that the best way to change the world is to change yourself ('if i stare too long, i might not see you right').

And if that wasn't still enough, the production's so fine that it has stabilshed new quality patterns for my ears.

Easily, 2000's best release. ... .
