excellent book for any wildlife enthusiast,

This review is from: America's Favorite Backyard Wildlife (Hardcover)
My uncle lent me this book and I have enjoyed every page of it. The Harrisons do an excellent job enlightening the reader about the basic wildlife species found in most any backyard. In addition, if you don't have these species showing up around your bird feeder, bath or in the trees, and meadows and the like around your home, they give hints to help you attract them. If you enjoy wildlife and want to learn as much as possible about the species that inhabit the treelines, sub divisions, marshes and gardens that surround you, this book is a must read.

This review is from: America's Favorite Backyard Wildlife (Paperback)
I am familiar with Mr. Harrison because I own AMERICA'S FAVORITE BACKYARD BIRDS, a wonderful reference book for those new to birding. You can tell by the way the Harrisons' books read that they are honorary caretakers of God's creatures. Even though the authors live in Wisconsin I was still able to use most of their good information on animals that live in our yard.
Though I never see chipmunks I do have a skunk. I was aware they are nocturnal but until my sister told me to do everything possible to keep the animal because he was beneficial, I wasn't aware of other facts. They love to eat insects which we have an abundance of. Yeah! Paying more attention, my family determined that our little friend lives in a culvert near the front of our home so we are careful not to disturb him (or her?). I haven't see a raccoon but I know we have foxes and opossums. Again, I can use this book to glean more facts. Though the Harrisons talk about box turtles we have gopher tortoises so I can use some of what they are saying to my advantage. We don't have deer but rabbits are abundant. Toads and lizards are part of our everyday life. You won't be able to use everything they tell you but the material will furnish the reader with enough information to give you a hedge on protecting your yard while at the same time respecting nature. |
