Book Description

October 27, 2011

An evocative and stunning photographic tribute to America's railroad stations.

For much of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the railroad station or depot was the communal hub of every American town that could boast of train service. There, citizens gathered before they sent loved ones off to college, marriage, or war-and where they greeted them on their return. Most of these buildings were architectural gems, and while many are still in service, certain others now house museums, banks, restaurants, and more. In fact, in cities like Washington, D.C., and Philadelphia, renovated stations are destinations unto themselves even for those not boarding the train. And in other places, whole sections of towns have been remade around these structures, restoring their vitality in novel and interesting ways long after the last train has left the station.

In America's Great Railroad Stations, award-winning photographer Roger Straus III, and two lifelong railroad buffs, Ed Breslin and Hugh Van Dusen, join forces to tell the astonishing story of these enduring structures and the important role they still play in the country's landscape. Journeying from the Pennsylvania Railroad to the Union Pacific to Michigan Central and more, readers will be dazzled by the Beaux Arts monuments of New York and the adobe buildings of the Southwest. Filled with both new and archival photographs and drawings, this volume is a glorious salute to the institution that transformed our nation.

4.0 out of 5 stars For people who love trains December 5, 2011
Format:Hardcover
These stations played a large role not just in transportation (passengers, mail, goods) but were the local's gathering places for restaurants, newsstands, and shops. Train stations reflected the best and latest architectural and decorative styles of their time. The most spectacular were built between 1880-1920. Most fell to the wrecking ball during the 1970's when the real estate value soared and railroads were short of cash. Jets and cars had destroyed passenger traffic.

The book has a few black and white photos of the exteriors of those stations which no longer exist but the beauty is really not there. What is shown in large color photos are some of the small and mid-sized town stations that have been restored. I was surprised at the number of New England and Southern stations that look great. The few large city (Chicago, New York, Pittsburgh, Washington DC) stations still in operation are included. Close ups help you see the craftsmen's detailed decorative works. The St. Louis station is gorgeous. Having seen it in person, I just wish the book had more photos to fully convey the beauty. Perhaps other stations covered by the book are also better in person.

So if you are interested in railroads or going on a trip in the US, this book may be a guide for planning a few stops along the way.

This book provides a great initial overview of many great stations and from this book one can then proceed to go into greater detail on specific stations. I went and visited the T&P and Sante Fe stations in Fort Worth because of this book and Iplan to visit others

4.0 out of 5 stars beautiful photos of an era long gone. January 15, 2012
Format:Hardcover
For those who pine for the "good old days" when railroads were king, this book is probably for you. A book with wonderful photos of some beautiful old railroad stations. Having read this book made me feel somewhat guilty. Four of these jewels are located within my very own state: Michigan. And I have not even taken the time to visit them. I have read of them in other publications and periodicals and even seen video of them, but have never bothered to visit in person. After reading this book and seeing the stations in more detail I just may have to change that situation. Makes me pine for the days of Don Draper (Mad Men)when most of the "men in the grey flannel suits" were able to use such beautiful structures. I get the pleasure of commuting in a 10 year old Mazda from my garage. The book is good. You like old railroad stations and memories, you will like this publication. Worth the time and effort. Fun on a winter's night in the flannel jammies by the roaring fire with a snoring spaniel.
