Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Though Flexner is now recognized as a master, this 1939 title was his first volume on American art. In it he profiles Benjamin West (1738-1820), John Singleton Copely (1738-1815), Charles Wilson Peale (1741-1827), and Gilbert Stuart (1755-1828). For this edition, 31 of the original illustrations have been rephotographed from new prints, and 38 additional illustrations have been included. A benchmark title for art history collections.

I found this book was able to shed some much needed light on America's first master painters. I found Flexner's writing to be beautiful and the result of reading this book has been several trips to view the works of the artists featured within. I heartily recommend this title to all who are interested in this period of American/art history, or to those who would likee to be!

Jimmy Flexner was a spellbinding biographer, and this collection shows why. What a fascinating array of characters, and what unexpected turns their lives took! Unexpected only if you are young, I suppose.

Well-written and entertaining, but fairly brief biographies of the artists John Singleton Copley, Benjamin West, Charles Willson Peale, and Gilbert Stuart
