If you have any interest in trains, and steam trains in particular, this is a `must have' collection of nine documentaries, some in color, all from the 1940s and 50s. Each documentary features an introduction that explains the historical context of the film.

As someone who, as a young child, used to hang around the Pere Marquette 1225 as it was being restored, the nostalgia for a time long past in railroad history was sparked by this collection. Seeing breakmen walk along the cars to turn their wheels, roundhouses barely holding a Big Boy, conductors working in their cabooses and the work shops firing the new wheels is a glimpse into the heart of what kept the American economy flowing. I couldn't help but wonder if this isn't also a glimpse into the sights and sounds that filled many a young boy's daydreams as he looked out the window of a school on a hot May afternoon.
