5.0 out of 5 stars Companion volume to Ten cents a dance, July 30, 2002
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: America's Sweetheart of Song (Audio CD)
Ruth was extremely popular - and commercially successful - in the 1920's and 1930's, though she was less successful in her personal life, which was dramatised in the film Love me or leave me (starring Doris Day).

This is the second compilation of Ruth's music released by ASV, and it contains 25 songs that didn't make it on to their first (the 20-track Ten cents a dance, also available from Amazon), so it is more generous. Even with a combined total of 45 tracks, they don't include all her hits, but they do contain most of the big ones.

Among the hits included here are Life is a song (her only number one, from 1935), Smoke gets in your eyes (a top 20 hit, and one of the earliest recordings of this classic, although Paul Whiteman's version went to #1 around the same time), 'Deed I do (#2 from 1927), What do we do on a dew-dew-dewy day (#4 from 1927) and Back in your own backyard (#5 from 1928) - and there are plenty of others, together with some songs that weren't hits.

If you enjoy the previously-mentioned Ten cents a dance compilation, you'll love this. There is no drop in quality from that volume, and there are more tracks.

There is enough of Ruth's music to fill at least a third volume of similar quality to the first two. Buy this to give ASV the necessary incentive.

Amazon have not provided a track listing at the time of this review, so here it is

1 Life is a song, let's sing it together
2 'Deed I do
3 What do we do on a dew-dew-dewy day
4 Back in your own backyard
5 Happy days and lonely nights
6 Beloved
7 I'll get by as long as I have you
8 Cryin' for the Carolines
9 Just a little closer
10 Love is like that, what can you do?
11 Nevertheless, I'm in love with you
12 Me!
13 A faded summer love
14 Cuban love song
15 It was so beautiful
16 I'll never be the same
17 Linger a little longer in the twilight
18 Close your eyes
19 Smoke gets in your eyes
20 Riptide
21 Easy come, easy go
22 You
23 It's a sin to tell a lie

24 There's a lull in my life
25 Goodnight, sweetheart

While this CD does not have all of Ruth's hits, it will round out your collection of her work. Sound quality is good. Her elocution is excellent as always.
