Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 4-7-- A brief biography of the explorer for whom America was named. Although physically attractive--with large print and many color and black-and-white illustrations--the book is only average in writing style and contains several strange omissions. For instance, the man's physical appearance is never described; Martin Waldseemueller, the scholar who first inscribed Vespucci's name on a map, is unaccountably absent; and Fradin states, ``We don't know how it happened that this middle-aged merchant decided to cross the ocean,'' despite reasons explicated in other books. Also, the book lacks a map, a horrendous oversight in a study of an explorer. Syme's Amerigo Vespucci (Morrow, 1969; o.p.) is much more interestingly detailed and readable than this treatment. It contains black-and-white drawings and includes a bibliography and map. The chapter on Vespucci in Lomask's Great Lives: Exploration (Scribners, 1988) is laden with errors and should not be used. --Ann W. Moore, formerly at Lane Road Library, Columbus, OH
