A grim alternate history scenario of a conquered America, December 26, 2008
This is the novelization of the miniseries "Amerika" which ran in the late 1980s. The premise is simple: the Soviet Union detonated four huge Electro-Magnetic Pulse ("EMP") hydrogen weapons over the continental United States, which had the effect of destroying all national communication, thereby rendering the military powerless. During the disorder, Soviet-controlled UNSSU (United Nations Special Service Unit) forces occupy the country. America then undergoes what comes to be called "The Transition" which is essentially a conversion of the former USA to a communist dictatorship.
The miniseries was grim, convoluted, and overlong, despite a bravo performance by Sam Neill. The novel is actually a little better and the storyline hangs together reasonably well, and manages to convey the basic ideas of the story -- that America can only be conquered if its own people lose sight of American ideals.
The story is set in a town called Milford, Nebraska, and it is a grim story of defeat and poverty. The town is controlled by the local chapter of the People's Progressive Party and the UNSSU occupation force. Much of America's produce is being shipped to Russia, and dissidents are sent to re-education camps. An ugly scenario indeed.
Abraham Lincoln once said that America could only be destroyed from within, as no foreign power could ever overcome such a large and powerful nation as America. While nuclear weapons make this less certain today, the central premise of this story is still correct -- that the greatest threat to liberty in America is the danger that our own people will abandon the ideals of the Founding Fathers.
