5.0 out of 5 stars Good for tough soil
I bought this because I needed a hoe that would break up very hard packed soil (in in New England, and the soil is rocky and root infested), not be too heavy to use for an extended period, and be a comfortable length (I'm 5'6"). This hoe does the trick. It's light enough to allow me good control so I can use close to plants and the blade has held its edge. Ames True...

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
A friend of mine let me borrow a garden hoe like this one and I just loved it (it was quite old). This Ames product is a disappointment. It is very hard to get the same results as from the one I borrowed. I really have to push on the Ames product to get it into the dirt and under the weeds. I have asked my friend to sharpen it for me. The dual action garden hoe works exactly as advertised, although the blade on each side of the hoe could be a bit sharper. But that is easily solved, I can sharpen it myself. Sure helps shorten the time in the garden!

I feel that this tool should be sharper. The plastic coating on the blade hinders cutting the weed. Pushing the hoe forward rather than pulling it back creates much better results.

This is a weeder. A two sided blade to be drawn and pushed just under the surface to uproot weeds. It works particularly well in mulch. It is fast and superior to any other method I've tried. First noticed landscapers in my neighborhood using it. Now that I've used it I wonder what took so long for someone to come up with such a great tool. I'll always have one of these in my garage hereafter. Goodbye Roundup.

Build quality is good. Would have preferred a fiberglass handle...but I didn't see that anyone was making one.

I thought I was getting a steal with this price. There are pricier ones at other places. I've tried a few of the pricier ones, and they are clearly better than this one. It is a bit flimsy and awkward. However, I feel I did get a fair value for the money. Just not a GREAT value. I'd probably buy this again.

I discovered a "stirrup" or "scuffle" hoe in an old house I came to live in, having never seen one before. It is now one of my absolutely indespensible gardening tools. I ended up with two very old ones - so old the cutting bar was half the width of its original size. This type of tool is designed to be both pushed and pulled. If you get a cheaply made one, the cutting bar will get bent and never be right again, even if you bend it back. I bought a True Temper model and it bent within a month. After bending in back many times and realizing it would never stay, I threw it out. Piece of junk. The True Temper design is flawed because there is not enough support for the cutting edge at the top of the hoe assembly. Do yourself a favor, spend more money and get one that is solidly built. This is a tool you should never have to replace.
