Requires some muscle, but works well...,

This review is from: Ames True Temper 1975900 Deluxe Rotary Edger with 48-Inch Wood Handle (Lawn & Patio)
After reading the reviews on other sites regarding this edger, I thought I'd give it a try and add it to my collection of environment friendly yard tools (reel mower, etc.). The reviews aren't kidding when they say it takes a lot of work to get your lawn looking good. It's really tough cleaning up the edges in the spring, after all the winter overgrowth, but once that's done, it's cake when used for upkeep. I like this edger, and am glad I bought it. It provides a much nicer looking edge than with a weed eater, it's just a matter of suffering once a year in the spring. Also, it definitely has the quality that all the other Ames tools have and should last me a long time to come. Manufacturing quality and the results this edger produces would give it 5 stars; however, the once a year muscle ache takes half a star away...so actually 4-1/2 stars, but that's not an option.

The idea is great. No gas or maintenance required like a power edger.
I unpackaged the edger and used it immediately as I wanted to see the results. My bermuda lawn itself looks great except for the edging. So I did a test on the smallest section of the lawn and the result were a nice straight line. In addition I used grass shears to cut along the line for a perfect look. So Here I am thinking I found my new best tool so off to the front of the house I go. I start on the long sidewalk path and start edging. Half way through edging this path I noticed that the edger isn't cutting the same. So I stand it up and what do you know, the entire black "V" bracket frame is bent. So I straighten it out and I cut some more and then it bent even further out. According to this tool my lawn is that thick. So I straightened it out again and that's how I had to use this tool. Cut...Straighten...Cut...Straighten...Cut...Straighten. After bending the metal bracket straight every few minutes I got annoyed. I can only guess that going at this rate the piece will eventual break off completely. There's a sticker on the wood frame that reads "Ames built America"...Then on the side opposite of the blade it reads "Made in China". Its going back asap. I will have to check out another company's manual edger because this one is cheaply made.

As the other reviewers note, this edger does take some physical effort. However, it does a nice job and gives me a bit of a workout. The construction is sound and it should last you a long time. Recommended for anyone who wants to reduce their carbon footprint.

I have been using this edger for atleast a year now and I'm really pleased with the quality! It has held up great with weekly use. You do have to put a little effort into it but it's well worth it.

Disgraceful Quality,
This review is from: Ames True Temper 1975900 Deluxe Rotary Edger with 48-Inch Wood Handle (Lawn & Patio)
I purchased an Ames Rotary Edger at Home Depot because I had urgent edging work to be done. The tool was worthless. It bent and was completely unusable within one minute of beginning edging.
I have used many such tools in the past that were much more ruggedly build. It is completely disgraceful that the brand of the oldest company in the USA (Ames) would be placed on such cheap Chinese manufactured crap. I find this to be generally true of many of the Ames Tools available today. To their credit Home Depot accepted the worthless product back for a credit without question.

Gets the job done,

I remember using one of these when I was younger, before the major storefront retailers decided you couldn't buy them there any more. I was glad to find it at Amazon. It gets the job done. If you haven't edged in a while, the first go at it will be brutal, particularly on the nasty stuff we have for grass in Florida. If you are strong enough, you can actually wind up deforming the metal yoke that holds the wheel and blades, but that can be put back into shape by hand.Thereafter, edging the driveway and/or sidewalk should take no time at all, and you get a nice clean edge that is far sharper than what a string trimmer would give you, with no use of gas and no pollution or noise.

Couldn't keep the rubber tread on the wheel. Won't roll like that. Kept the handle and threw the rest of it away.

If you're female and small built, I wouldn't recommend this product, unless you have muscles and in terrific shape. But even then, you will still shed a lot of blood, sweat and tears to work this thing!

Muscle Needed,
This review is from: Ames True Temper 1975900 Deluxe Rotary Edger with 48-Inch Wood Handle (Lawn & Patio)
If you are not very strong, I would opt for a different edger. I cannot use the product. I am going to try a step edger. My fried has had some success with this edger, but it seems that the amount of strength it takes to actually edge will soon break the tool.

I own two of this and both have fallen apart after a year. Tread came off the wheel on one and the pins that hold the wheels came off the other. I would not recommend this product.
