My first purchase of this shovel was a wedding shower gift for a 6'2" male. My shovel of choice was always light-weight with a small head, but I liked the wide step plate (I had previously suffered a stress fracture from jumping on my shovel trying to divide Mexican mint marigold), so I thought I'd try it. It was love at first dig! The angle and sharpness of the edge penetrates even tough clay or, more frequently in my situation, small tree roots. The step plate is comfortable under your foot and even though the head is large the shovel is so well balanced that I have no trouble lifting a full load. I originally purchased the first two at Lowes, but was unable to find them this season. I wanted to send one to my brother-in-law, so I ordered one through Amazon (best price) right before Christmas. It wasn't expected to arrive until after the actual day, but it got there in time, so I was pleased with the service. After using my old shovel in the back to dig compost I decided I really wanted one both places (garage for the front, shed at the far back). I was also afraid if I somehow broke mine I wouldn't be able to get another one and cannot imaging ever digging without it. I ordered two more, one for me and one for my next door neighbor, who lets me use his sunny space for veggies (I have all shade). They also came quickly. He loves his as much as I love mine, and he's 80. I'm 58 and have been gardening since I can remember, as my Mom is a gardener. She doesn't dig anymore, but I'm considering sending her one so I have it when I visit.
