WHY ARE PEOPLE SLEEPING ON THIS?, January 5, 2002
This review is from: Amethyst Rock Star (Audio CD)
Seeing Saul Williams in the exellcent 1998 film "Slam",
made me very intrested to see how his album,"Amethyst
Rock Star" would sound.
I'm happy to say,my intrest proved me right.
Williams' debut is groundbreaking-to say the least.
Produced by the legendary Rick Rubin,Williams set it off with an unique brand of edgy, meaningful tracks that defy
classifaction. This no hip-hop or soul or rock.
This is just quite simply:great music.
My favorites are "1987",on which Saul brings back some memories of the old-soul and "Penny For Your Thoughts",
a mind-blowing track about the big numbers of rappers using music for finicinal reasons instead of artistic ones.
The music's great but still, people are still sleeping on this.
People complain about the lack of depth in mainstream music yet, when a next-level project comes along, they ignore it.
But one thing can't be ignored:the power of Saul Williams'
message.

Simply Amazing, February 19, 2002
This review is from: Amethyst Rock Star (Audio CD)
If you are not used to the underground world of hip hop and indie films or spoken word poetry, you have probably slept on Saul Williams. On this album Amethyst rock Star, Williams delivers a verbal assault that is as mind numbing as it is incredible. From the beginning, Williams shows his listeners that he isn't going to give you an average idea of hip hop. A good taste of his musical voice would be the spoken work piece oohm that is available on the Lyricist Lounge Vol. 1 or on the Rhino word beat album our souls have grown deep like the rivers. The best known example besides the album you are reading the review for now is his Sha Clack Clack that was featured on the soundtrack to the film Slam, featuring another terrific poet Sonja Sohn. Overall this album is not easily digestable for hip hop purists, but completely untouchable by the generation that thinks that Jay z invented hip hop, or that can't remember before Biggie or 2pac. If you are a listener who likes albums that are released by Rawkus records, or enjoy artists like Me'shell N'degeocello, pick it up, you won't be sorry.

As good as it gets, April 30, 2004
This review is from: Amethyst Rock Star (Audio CD)
Though it's more than just hip hop, a hybrid of rock, trip hop, psychedilia, industrial, drum n'bass, all inbetween, it's mostly related to hip hop at it's core element. Being this it almost sounds like the farthest hip hop has gone. I dont think anyone could challenge Saul on this. Phenomenal.
