4.0 out of 5 stars Even wittier than Grafton!
Gayle Roper's Merry Kramer is one of the spunkiest, most loveable characters I've 'met' recently. She's got enough human foibles that I can relate to her, but she's clever and sharp enough that I admire her deeply. Roper's first-person style shows Merry Kramer off to full advantage and is perfect for this fast-paced story of adventure and intrigue. I couldn't put it...

3.0 out of 5 stars Third book, too many repeats
What is an editor's job? This is book # 3 in the Merry Kramer series and there have now been TWO dead bodies in her car and what , THREE times she locked her keys either in the car or in the house?? I bought four in the series for Kindle based on the multiple glowing reviews, but is anybody else frustrated by the plot repeats? Come on - I can suspend believability that...

5.0 out of 5 stars Hysterically Funny!!, January 12, 2004
By A Customer
Gayle Roper is one of my favorite authors, and this book is one of my absolute favorite books. As the third book in the series centering around Merry Kramer, this one is definetely the best. I laugh aloud at the same parts every time I reread this book.

Merry is a great character, well written and someone you can sympathize with. She's spunky, and not a perfect person like characters in other Christian books are. The mystery is intriguing but the characters are the main reason I keep coming back to this series. Other characters, including Curt and Jolene are equally as entertaining.

This is a very entertaining and uplifting book, and you don't have to worry about being preached to. My friend and I have very different reading tastes, but she loved this book just as much as I did! This is definetly a book to curl up on a winter day while drinking some hot chocolate!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Third Book, February 8, 2001

Merry is back for her third book, and she's still got what it takes to entertain. This book has everything you'd expect from the other two, great characters, great mystery, and personal problems for Merry that make life just a little more interesting. But she faces them all with her faith in the Lord, which helps her through everything. I was a little disappointed because the mystery takes a back seat to the plots involving abuse. Still, a very entertaining read that I plan to read many times myself.

5.0 out of 5 stars Delightful Mystery Book, May 4, 2000
By A Customer
This was another wonderful book by Gayle Roper! I have read all three in the series, and have enjoyed each one thoroughly. As with the others, I could not put it down until I had finished it! The author makes Merrileigh and other characters so believable and the stories so interesting. I strongly recommend the Amhearst Mysteries.

Come on - I can suspend believability that the same small town would have so many murders, and even close my eyes to Merry [the reporter's] incredible involvement in all of them, but is it too much to ask for a little more variety in the story lines? Applying "You get what you pay for" might lower the expectations for a $3.95 book, but since the author's writing style and character development have captivated me, I want to stick with her. Like many current Christian fiction novels, serious issues are explored in Gayle Roper's books, including the subplot of spouse abuse in this story, and there is value in showing how faith and hope make a difference.

Suspence was very good. Romance was a "I kind of seen it coming". The entire collection by Gayle Roper is good.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Mysterious Romp With Depth, August 22, 2007

This review is from: Caught in a Bind (Amhearst Mystery Series #3) (Steeple Hill Love Inspired Suspense #58) (Mass Market Paperback)
Caught In A Bind is book three in this delightful series. As usual, Merrilee Kramer is lively, cute as a button, and full of endearing foibles. But the reason I HIGHLY recommend this book is the subtheme that looks into domestic violence. At one point tears sprang to my eyse, when a usually disrespectful teenage boy (who himself had been brought up in a home filled with violence) puts his arms around two little tikes just rescued from a scene where there mom was beaten to a pulp and comforts them.

The "who-dun'it" part is well written. The reader can't firgure out, and has to wait till the end to find out why dead bodies are being dumped in cars. The book opens with a bang! The husband of Merry's coworker, Edie Whatley, has gone missing along with $18,000, the price of the economy car which he just sold to an elderly couple for cash. The police believe he's a thief. Merry and Edie know he's not and are worried about him. To make matters worse, Merry's job, as well as those of the entire crew at the news might be in jeopardy. The new owner of the paper has not made it known if he'll keep the paper open. And the new owner's sophisticated daughter, Delia is after Curt, Merry's boyfriend. Delia owns a posh art gallery and is offering painter Curt Carlyle an exhibit and introductions to art bigwigs in New York City. This is something Merry can't compete with, or so she thinks.

The plot keeps roiling and boiling until the end when all is revealed. Merry winds up running down a street as a speeding car tries to run her over. Author Gayle Roper returns again and again to the idea of "chosing well," as Merry tells herself she may not have control of circumstances, but she can chose how she will respond to those circumstances. The book is witty, an intriguing mystery, a charming romp, and yet has incredible depth.
