Format: Audio CD
1995's Amid Its Hallowed Mirth was the debut album from Novembers Doom, one of America's absolute finest doom/death metal bands. The band's early sound was very similar to their European counterparts Amorphis (as in Black Winter Day-era Amorphis), My Dying Bride, and very early Paradise Lost. In fact, listening to this bleak, deathly doom metal brings to mind cold Scandinavian forests a lot quicker than it does the Chicago skyline.

It's not as refined or innovative as the band's later offerings, but Amid Its Hallowed Mirth is still an impressive doom/death metal release, and one that all serious doom/death metal fans should check out, especially now that it has been reissued.

Edition Notes: The End Records reissued Amid Its Hallowed Mirth in 2008. In addition to digitally remastered sound, all-new album artwork, and expanded liner notes, the reissue includes the 2-song Her Tears Drop demo and the 4-song 1992 Scabs demo from pre-Novembers Doom incarnation Laceration as bonus tracks.

While I write this in the dead of the cold month of November and while it is technically a Novembers Doom CD, I am going to offer a specialized review focusing on the pre-Novembers Doom demo and 7" material only. While I have nothing against the later stuff, I am primarily a fan of brutal early '90s underground death metal first and foremost, rather than the more avant-garde doom metal sound that got popular later on.

In the early '90s, Chicago had a thriving underground death metal scene, with bands like Broken Hope, Morgue, Oppressor, and Maimed all hailing from this particular corner and isolated pocket of the country. Laceration formed in the nearby suburb of Bridgeview in 1989 and were a more than formidable addition to the cannon.

First off, I want to say that this CD gets docked a star right from the get-go because the liner notes contain some misinformation. Specifically, it claims the Laceration demo "Scabs" (tracks 12-15 here) was recorded in 1990, when in fact I have seen a copy of the original demo tape itself, which clearly states that the recording was completed on 3/16/92. Also, it does not have the songs in their original running order either. Still, both of these are minor qualms I guess for music this cool.

What a demo "Scabs" was. It consists of utterly pulverizing death/doom metal of the highest order, with emphasis on the doom. The group rarely if ever accelerates the tempo in the music and I feel this made them stand out from their peers at the time by a good deal. As a matter of fact, the band photo that was included with the "Scabs" cassette pictured the group huddled around a street sign marked "slow," no doubt a reference to the band's seeming refusal to play at anything but a slow, crushing pace all the way through.
