This book is for the discriminating reader that appreciates virtue. I could never do it justice in these brief words. I love this work and I am very grateful that it came to be. It almost didn't since it was published after Amiel's death, by his friends to whom Amiel left his work. A very personal and beautiful journal, full of wonderful insights into Life, the nature of things, the human condition, etc. I love Amiel. What an honest man.

They were contemporaries. The copy I read was a first edition printed in 1897; it's a tiny book that almost looks like an old bible. The pages are goldlined, with a leather cover, and it's small enough (3.5 inches x 4 inches) to slide in your back pocket. The typeface is so small (font size 6? font size 4?) i could barely read it. I won't spoil it for you but it's certainly worth reading, and although as a diary, it was never meant for publication, nietzsche for example, read amiel. There are, incidentally, two books. Amiel's Journal Intime volume I and volume II.
