Editorial Reviews

Review

Ana Paula Rimoli is synonymous with amigurumi. Amigurumi Toy Box is her third book of cute crocheted friends. She has also published Amigurumi World and Amigurumi Two! For those of you who don't know what amigurumi is; it is the Japanese art of crocheting small stuffed toys, animals and inanimate objects with facial features. In Japanese "ami" means crocheted and "nuigurumi" means a stuffed doll.

Ana Paula first started crocheting as a child. With two children of her own, she was inspired to create these toys. In this
book there are 25 adorable toys to crochet and fill up a child's toy box.

The book is filled with clear vignettes of toys posed in artful surroundings. Simple crochet skills are required to complete the projects. Illustrations are included to teach yourself the required crochet stitches. Finishing techniques of stuffing, adding extremities and weaving in the ends etc. are included.

Flan, hot cocoa, cake and a hot dog set are perfect for the child who likes to play house. I especially liked the Little Bunny in the Carrot home. Santiago (my little Boston Terrier) and Little Kitten are perfect for imagine play and they each have a bed. If you love Unicorns, Shy Little Unicorn is pretty with her rainbow mane. Mom koala has a detachable baby on her back and there is also a Mom and baby polar bear with a fishing rod and hat.

This may be just the book to start getting a child interested in learning to crochet. Amigurumi is popular and getting more so. Ravelry has several amigurumi groups you can join. Joining a group is always a fun way to show what you have created. --Paula Moliver, Hartford Knitting Examiner

More About the Author

Hola, I'm Ana Paula Rimoli, Oli (8) & Martina's (5) mom :) They are the inspiration for all the toys I make, and the ones that do the quality control ;)
I love love love crocheting and making toys. I've been making stuff for as long as I can remember, and I have to thank my neighbor Marta in Montevideo, Uruguay, for teaching me how to crochet when I was little, I think 6 or 7, sitting outside one Summer.
Now I have all these dumb dreams of crocheting endless "group effort" afghans or huge families of toys with my girls... I hope they'll like it!
Happy crocheting, and thank you for stoping by!
xoxo
Ana

This is the third crochet book by Ana Paula Rimoli that I have purchased and it is just as good as the others. I had never even heard of amigurumi until I spotted Ana's first book "Amigurumi World" a few years ago- it was from that book that I learned to crochet, and since then I have made many, many of the toys featured in her two previous books. Who could resist those sweet yarn toys with their smiling faces?!

This book (like the previous ones) has a helpful, easy-to-follow "Guidelines" section that shows how to complete the stitches required in the patterns. Most of them require little beyond chain and single crochet stitches as well as the ability to crochet in the round, and most are designed to be quick projects of a couple hours or less. Each one requires only small amounts of yarn and other supplies, so they can often be made with leftovers from previous crafting projects. In addition to yarn, you'll need crochet hooks (patterns use G/6, F/5 and E/4 hooks), scraps of felt, a yarn needle, and either plastic safety eyes or bits of felt to sew on for eyes. These little yarn characters make great (and inexpensive) little homemade gifts; they are so cute and they will be enthusiastically received by anybody you give one to!

The patterns are easy to follow and list all steps clearly. Each pattern is accompanied by lovely color photos (often several, showing the completed item from different vantage points) that are super helpful to look at as you make your toys. The patterns all have assembly instructions for joining together the individually crocheted pieces to make the finished project.

This book has patterns for the following-

Hot Dog Set (a hot dog, bun, ketchup & mustard bottles)
Mom & Baby Polar Bear (with hat and fishing pole!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book! July 20, 2011
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This book has easy-to-follow instructions on how to make cute amigurumi toys. The only thing that was missing was where to put the eyes, but I just estimated and the toys still looked great (or perhaps I didn't read carefully and missed the instruction for where to put the eyes).

5.0 out of 5 stars Oh the cuteness! June 10, 2011

I love this book. It is filled with patterns for such adorable animals and even some "inanimate" objects such as a wonderful tree. Each pattern has a wonderful description of the "history" of the animal or object. These descriptions gives the book a feeling that it was written just for me.

Very cute but hard to put together. Wish there was some way to make them all in one piece or an easier way to sew them together.

4.0 out of 5 stars Amigurumi + Ana Paula Rimoli = AWESOME! January 23, 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This book is so much fun! I just finished my first ami from this book: the jellyfish and it turned out SO GOSH DARNED CUTE, I want to make a whole troop of them! The patterns are very easy to follow and I love that she shows pics of the fronts & backs and also the underneath if there is a particular thing that needs to be noted about the pattern, so you can check on your progress to see if you're doing it right. There are basic stitch how-to's/reminders in the back & a glossary of stitches used (in case you don't quite remember or know what the abbreviations stand for), and even an embroidery stitch how-to for things like noses and mouths. The only thing I would have liked to see is a rough estimate of how tall/long each of the finished items are, but it's not a life-threatening issue (and I know it depends on yarn weight/ hook gauge and all that) but a rough estimate would have been a nice little reference bonus. These animals are SO cute and I just can't wait to make more!! (next is the hot cocoa and the fox!!:D) I would recommend this book to EVERYONE, even beginners since the patterns are easy to understand and follow and the time to make them is relatively quick. HAVE FUN!! :)

i love this amigurumi book! the patterns are cute, especially the unicorn. however, there are some typo (numbers of stitches are wrong) in the patterns. beginners may have trouble to understand, but for experienced crocheters, it's not a problem!
