More About the Author

I was born and raised in Oklahoma City. My husband, Steve, and I met at the University of Oklahoma. We married in 1978, at the end of our senior year at OU when we each completed our degrees, mine in interior design and his in zoology. He went on to obtain a Ph.D. in Zoology at Arizona State University. His career has taken us to Tempe, AZ, Tulsa, OK, and most recently to Sherman, TX, where he is currently chair of the Biology Department. Luckily, I can make quilts anywhere!

Our boys, Chris and Jeff, were born while Steve was in graduate school. I discovered quilting when the boys were young and needed comforters for their bunk beds. I have not put my needle down since!

I met Linda Jenkins, my partner in Piece O' Cake Designs, not long after I started quilting at a meeting of the Green Country Quilters' Guild in Tulsa. We've been friends ever since. We started Piece O' Cake in 1994. I could not ask for a better partner.

Making quilts is interesting, fulfilling, and challenging. Running the business with Linda is exhilarating. Although not what I thought I would be doing with my life when I graduated from college, this is so much better!

Our son, Chris, married Lorna in 2001. They presented us with our first grandchild, Elanor Cecelia, November 6, 2002 and John Patrick Kelly "Jack" Goldsmith was born October 24, 2007. Being a "Nana" is truly wonderful.

Jeff married Celia in the summer of 2009. I am blessed - I have two daughter-in-laws that I both love and respect. Life it good!

2.0 out of 5 stars not my favorite piece o cake, June 12, 2007

i ordered this volume because i love the others. it does have the usual superb directions, photos and diagrams. but, aside from two impressive small quilts, the patterns in this book really did not attract me, and i am returning it.

amish quilts are formal, 'serious' and still extremely traditional quilts. whimsy is definitely not an amish quilting trait. i think the patterns in this book are not only below the usual level of this team's output, but even somewhat insulting to the supposed inspiration of the amish quilts.

however, tastes differ. anything these women write will be useful and informative to nearly every quilter. but i would recommend one of their other titles to a quilter who isn't familiar with piece o cake.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource, November 6, 2010

I have to say I am a little surprised to see some negative reviews for this volume. This is a wonderful resource for the contemporary quilter-- do not expect the same traditional designs you may see elsewhere! I had to buy this book after I borrowed it from my library and kept coming back to it. I was very happy to see that although the book itself seems to be out of print and is somewhat hard to find, there are still quality suppliers that have it new at a terrific price. I prefer quilting books that are not marked up from previous users' efforts.

Directions are clear and easy to follow, as other reviewers have mentioned, and the diagrams are up to this team's usual level. Enough said. If you are familiar at all with their other titles, you know the quality of layout I am talking about.

I think it's important to remember that the quilts in this volume are "Amish-Inspired." I agree that they are not somber or serious in any sense of the word-- go elsewhere if that is what you are looking for. The designs here truly reflect modern quiltmaking's use of color, mood, and play. They make a cheerful addition to many rooms, but still fit the Amish motif that I love. I made one for a cousin's new baby and it has taken center stage in his nursery! All in all a brilliant fusion of new and old, and one that I am proud to own. 5 stars to the authors for not being afraid to bring a sense of fun design aesthetic to a traditional style!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great choice to try applique, March 22, 2007
This review is from: Amish-Inspired Quilts: Tradition with a Piece O' Cake Twist (Paperback)
This is my first Piece O'Cake book, and I've really enjoyed it. It's also the first time I've tried applique, and the directions are easy to follow.
