Editorial Reviews

Amish Music Variety samples the type of music used by the Amish in both worship and social singing in German and English. It is an authentic recording of an Amish ensemble, recorded and used with permission of the group. Unison, four-part, some harmonica and zither. German hymns (translated in liner notes) are from the Ausbund hymnal, continuously used since 1564. Some tracks have been used by PBS and NPR as background for documentaries. Songs: The Spirit's Sword, In the Sweet By and By, Golden Deed, Tune 25, Work for the Night is Coming, There is Not Another, So I Keep On Singing, Preaching Chant, O God Father, Let Us Pray for Each Other, Nellie Gray, Jesus Christ the Son, Unser Vater, Christ the Lamb, Prayer Chant, Must I Go Empty Handed, Daddy's Hands, My Ways Are Not Your Ways, When the Day Is Ended, I Need No Mansion.

Want to experience music within the Amish community? This includes both secular and sacred pieces. It is well done and a treat to the ears.

"Amish Music" provides a relaxing glimpse into the simple lifestyle of an American icon, the Amish. Regardless of one's particular faith or spiritual path, the music and audio clips on this CD illustrate not only the ways of the Amish today, but also reflect a far more peaceful and basic lifestyle which was shared by the vast majority of Americans only a century ago, give or take a bit. We were so pleased with the CD, we ordered a second, and may order more as gifts for friends who can appreciate the wonderful values which only a more rural, agrarian-based lifestyle can offer.

Having listened to the background music on the recent TV series about the Amish I thought I would enjoy this cd. It is very scrappy and poor really. I can understand the Amish are a 'secret' sort of sect and keep themselves to themselves but I think a little research could have produced something better. Songs and music were variously sourced and this led to a very disjointed effect. Words were very hard to understand no doubt some in German . Disappointing over all.
