Excerpt
The Amish have captured the interest of the modern world because of their quaint clothing, horses and buggies, their striking quilts, their lusty food. These people prefer to be regarded as a community of faith who deliberately seek to live in a way that honors God and the creation.
How did the Amish develop and retain a food tradition that is identifiable? With their sustained rural base, the Amish have maintained a productive relationship with their gardens and fields. With their large extended families they have not only been able to convey the love of certain dishes to their children, but they have also been able to show their daughters how to make those specialties, many of which are learned best by "feel" rather than by reading a cookbook. In addition, their active community life supports the continuation of a food tradition -- at gathered times favorite dishes appear, undergirding the event, whether it be a school picnic, a funeral, or sister's day.
An Amish Table contains old recipes, but they are written to be understood and used by those without the benefit of these people's history or the presence of an experienced cook. Here, then, is the possibility of making good food -- not fancy, but substantial; more hearty than delicate; in tune with the seasons.

4.0 out of 5 stars An Amish Table, October 24, 2010
This review is from: An Amish Table (Hardcover)
I have always been fascinated with the Amish culture. Their appreciation and understanding of the land, the simple yet memorable recipes, and the quiet lifestyle that they choose to lead are all aspects of the culture that have drawn my interest. The photos in this book are beautiful and show a community that is truly happy and well fed! Images of bread fresh from the stone oven, women picking berries, piles of vegetables at the market, and a simple pot of soup all show a love of simple, fresh foods and a community working together. I was thrilled to find recipes for whoopie pies and molasses cookies, two of my grandmother's favorites that I used to look forward to every summer when we went to visit! These are not fancy recipes with foreign names that come from around the globe. These are recipes you would find in a norther kitchen 60 years ago.

If I could change anything about this book it would be to make it bigger so it could include more photos and recipes. It is only about 4 inches square and I would have loved to see a section that included a more detailed discussion of the Amish culture itself. Despite it's size, it is a wonderful little cookbook with nice, hearty meals made with simple foods that came straight from the fields!

This is a good book but I gave it 3 stars for being so tiny and not including much at all. I don't think I paid that much for it though so I guess that's why.
