Susmita Dasgupta has written a well-researched and thoughtful book on Amitabh Bachchan. She has chosen to look at his public persona as seen through the lens of his film roles. This is not a biography, as such, and those looking for gossip about Rekha or the details of Aish and Abhi's wedding will not find those here.

Anyone interested in film culture in India and the nature of celebrity, however, will find a lot to chew on.
