Book Description

May 3, 2011 Constable Molly Smith Mysteries

Fifteen years ago a young girl by the name of Moonlight Smith went to her best friend Nicky Nowak’s house for a sleepover. Moonlight joined the family for breakfast the following morning and was then picked up by her mother. Shortly after, Mr. Nowak went for a walk.

He was never seen again.

Autumn has arrived on the mountains above Trafalgar, B.C., and the promise of winter is in the air. Constable Molly Smith is cuddled by the fireplace with Adam Tocek of the RCMP when Tocek and his dog Norman are called to a wilderness camping ground to join the search for a little boy who snuck away from his family looking for bears.

The child is found, dirty, terrified, weeping, but unharmed. Then the inquisitive Norman digs up something else: human bones.

The ID isn’t positive, but it is enough to have Sergeant John Winters of the Trafalgar City Police pulling old boxes from the basement to re-open the Brian Nowak investigation. He finds a family shattered beyond recognition by the disappearance of their husband and father. Mrs. Nowak is an empty shell of a woman, dressed in pajamas, never leaving the house. Her son Kyle haunts the streets of Trafalgar at night and spends his days creating beautiful, but highly troubling, art. Nicky Nowak lives in Vancouver and has grown up to be gorgeous, charming, elegant. Yet behind that facade lies a woman whose heart has closed so tightly against human relationships she comes to Trafalgar trailing in her wake a terrifying threat to another innocent family.

As the investigation into the life and disappearance of Brian Nowak grows, old secrets are brought to light and new ones struggle to remain hidden.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"The reading of the unabridged book by Carrington MacDuffie is great: she brings out the humor and has plenty of energy."—Metapsychology Online Reviews

"By using western Canada as her setting, Delany gives us a breathtaking vista, in which she places her deceptively minimalist plots. Her exceptional ability to create characters, both realistic and sometimes creepy, makes this another terrific addition to her outstanding body of work." —Library Journal starred review

"Delany...invigorates the cozy genre with an unsparing look at love in all its variations, including coming to terms with it the second time around." —Kirkus Reviews

"Compelling, thought provoking, and heart-rending...[Among the Departed] scrutinizes the nature of perception, misconception, prejudice, rejection, and love; it reminds us that acceptance, in all areas of life and love, is paramount." —The Compulsive Reader

"The beautiful setting nicely frames this village police procedural, which boasts well-delineated characters and combines police investigation with the life of cops on the beat." —Booklist

"Delany has a good grasp of what is required in a police procedural. Her characters are believable... The plot works very well."—Reviewing the Evidence

"For any fan of police and crime novels, this is a very satisfying read."—Portland Book Review

More About the Author

Vicki Delany began her writing career as a Sunday writer: a single mother of three high-spirited daughters with a full-time job as a computer programmer. Sunday afternoon was - and at that, only now and again - the only time she had to spend all by herself, with a single candle on her desk for a bit of atmosphere, a Bruce Springsteen tape in the tape deck, and a nice cup of tea at her elbow. When she felt like really letting loose, the tea might have turned into a glass of wine.

The years passed, as they tend to do, and the three daughters, somewhat hesitantly, flew the coop, leaving Vicki more time to devote to her writing. She was able to write three novels of suspense, set in Ontario, two of which, Scare the Light Away and Burden of Memory were published to critical acclaim by Poisoned Pen Press of Scottsdale, Arizona.

In 2007, Vicki took early retirement from her job as a systems analyst with a major bank and sold her house in Oakville, Ontario. At that time In the Shadow of the Glacier, the first book in a police procedural series set in the British Columbia Interior was published. After travelling around North America for a year with her dog, Shenzi, she bought a home in bucolic, rural Prince Edward County, Ontario, where she rarely wears a watch and can write whenever she feels like it.

Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Vicki was raised mostly in Ontario. As a young woman, fresh from quitting Carleton University in a huff in the middle of her final year, she travelled to South Africa where she promptly met a man, married him, and produced the aforesaid three daughters. Eleven years later, Vicki returned to Canada. Of her experiences in Africa she will only say that it gave her insight into to the politics of power and oppression that few Canadians get to experience.

Vicki majored in modern history at Carleton University, her interest more in the lives of ordinary women and men and the circumstances of their times than 'big men' and their wars. It was on a canoeing trip in Algonquin Park that Vicki, realizing that she was doing for fun what people in the past would have considered a hardship, told her trip mates stories about the incredible difficulties people endured in their attempts to get to the Klondike in search of gold, and the idea for a series of Klondike Gold Rush mysteries was set.

She writes in several different subgenres: Standalone novels of suspense (Scare the Light Away, Burden of Memory from Poisoned Pen Press), traditionl village/police procedural (The Constable Molly Smith Series from PPP - latest, Winter of Secrets) and the lighthearted Klondike Gold Rush series (Gold Digger, Gold Fever from Rendezvous Crime).

Vicki is a member of Crime Writers of Canada, and Capital Crime Writers, and is on the board of Wolfe Island's Scene of the Crime Mystery Festival.

5.0 out of 5 stars A compelling mystery by a great story-teller!, June 26, 2011
Once again, Delany hits the mark with Among The Departed, a mystery set in BC's stunning mountain region. More than just a mystery-writer, Delany has a keen insight into the often strained family ties that are the backdrop for her tales. Realistic characters, straight-forward story-telling and an old-style mystery are the hall-mark of Delany's work

You won't be disappointed -- this one should be on any mystery-lover's summer reading list!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book! Wonderful Mystery Series!, May 15, 2011
I was thrilled to be transported once again to the lovely Kootenay town of Trafalgar in beautiful British Columbia through another delightful story in the Smith and Winters series by Vicki Delany. With each book in the series, I become more attached to her wonderful characters. I had a hard time putting the story down as her plot kept me guessing as to what was going to happen next! Highly recommend this book as well as the entire series. Keep them coming Vicki, they are so enjoyable to read!
