Editorial Reviews

Product Description
Hailing from Albuquerque, New Mexico, LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT has managed to build one of the most die-hard fan-bases in the underground extreme scene completely do-it yourself with a sound all their own - a paradoxical paradigm shift in a world of monotonous metal. Sharing the stage with bands such as Vital Remains, Decapitated, Exhumed, All Shall Perish, Suffocation, Shadows Fall, Suicide Silence just to name a few. LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT has proved time and time again that they can hang with some of the biggest names in metal.

In late 2006, LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT inked a deal with SIEGE OF AMIDA RECORDS. shortly after the release of their EP The Road Leads to Nowhere. The self-produced and distributed album quickly sold out of all original copies without a single tour under their belt concluding that fans of true metal are still ravenous for gritty 70's horror flick themed music.

In early 2007 they began pre-production for their new leviathan, Among Flies - an album consisting of 11 tracks, including matured versions of select old favorites from their EP. The album's title track is written as if to be an omitted chapter from William Golding's The Lord of the Flies. Traces of themes from the book are scattered throughout the remainder of the album as well. LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT was more than fortunate to formulate an all-star cast for Among Flies which features artwork by the legendary Simon Bisely (DC, Verotik, Marvel Comics), mixing by Grammy Award winning Neil Kernon (Nevermore, Cannibal Corpse, Judas Priest), and mastering done by Alan Douches (Mastodon, Nile, The Red Chord).

Metal has always meant to be a counter-response to the safety of mainstream music, not revile in the gluttony of it; with LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT, you won't find any tight pants, eyeliner or any filler, but simply five devoted musicians with nothing to prove but their love for dark, progressive, heavy metal, and their competency at creating it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good not Great, November 24, 2008
So, I had the bands old cd, which was cool, very true to deathmetal while utilizing some of the modern hardcore/metalcore style. However, the more I've listened to this new cd, the more I think...they don't know what they want to do. It's not death metal per say, it's not deathcore, It's metal, but doesn't follow a specific trend of any of the above.

So where does this leave us? A good listen no doubt, but not one that strikes a large impact. It's good metal, something that you can listen to, feel good about being into and not really care what kind of style their shooting for.

For a cohesive whole though, it just doesn't cut it. I'm sure the next full length will be tighter, crisper, and more thought out, for now, it's just another metal band making metal music.

3.0 out of 5 stars Last House On The Left- Among flies, April 2, 2009
Last House On The Left, is a great up and coming young band. They have a lot of talent both musicaly and their lyrics are top notch, but they sound a bit too much like The Black Dahlia Murder. Im sure with time they will find their groove.

3.0 out of 5 stars Recommended for fans of Black Dahlia Murder., December 4, 2008
Last House On The Left is a band that I really want to like, but just can't seem to get into. They're named after one of the most brutal Horror movies in history and I was hoping their sound would live up to their namesake, but it doesn't. The band's style is a cross between Melodic Death Metal similar to The Black Dahlia Murder and Deathcore similar to bands like Job For A Cowboy. However, I would say it's predominantly Melodic Death Metal. Music-wise and vocally. The vocals are almost EXACTLY like Black Dahlia Murder... low Death Metal growls from the bowels of Hell and high pitched shrieking, often co-existing and layered on top of one another. The music is not too Tech-y and sticks to the brutal aspect with simple riffs that don't go too far off into Metalcore-land. It's fast and heavy music with the occasional chugging breakdowns that aren't overly Hardcore, if you know what I mean.

Before listening to AMONG FLIES, I didn't know much about the band and was drawn to their name and the album cover artwork. Upon first listen I was pretty impressed and I have listened to the album about four or five times before writing this review. The overall feeling I get, is that Last House On The Left has what it takes, but will ultimately be held back because of their unoriginal sound and unfortunately they will most likely get lost in the shuffle of the overpopulated world of Death Metal, and Metal in general. That is, unless they can either come up with an original twist on the genre or perfect their instruments and totally blow the roof off of the music world. But for now, AMONG FLIES is just a slightly above average Death Metal album that has a few enjoyable moments. Highlights of the album for me are "Some Like To Bleed" which has banjos in it! And not distorted, Poison The Well banjos either... just straight up banjos sandwiched in the middle of a thundering Death Metal song. Awesome. "Bloodletting The Sun" has some Groove to it and the opening riff reminds me of a faster version of Cannibal Corpse's "Stripped, Raped And Strangled". "Night's Ardor" starts off with sinister keyboards and pianos and sounds like the lost soundtrack to a Dario Argento movie, before kicking into a Black Dahlia-style tune.

Overall, I wouldn't necessarily recommend Last House On The Left but I wouldn't talk anyone out of listening to them either. They're a talented group of guys and I agree with the other reviewer who said that they're not bad but not great either. AMONG FLIES is not a bad listen by any means, but the end result is why settle for good when you can get GREAT?
