Inspiring and impossible to put down.,
By darment@netins.net (Rural Iowa) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Among the Lilies (Paperback)
This is the story of an Amish girl who left her community to marry an "outsider" and how it changed her life. It is inspiring how she deals with life's hardships. Sometimes families don't communicate well, but remain steadfast and lovingly care for each other. It also shows how you can accept what life brings you and turn the bad into good. At every turn there was something new to keep you from putting the book down. We kept passing the book around where I work and everyone is waiting for the sequel to be published. This very talented author should be promoted more widely, as well as her awesome books.

Needs a new edition,
By robin reader (NY, USA) - See all my reviews

I picked this book up from a table of free, used books at a church. I'm glad that I got it this way, and didn't pay for it. While the novel's plot is engaging, and the characters are well-drawn, I found the long theological discussions to be a dragging anchor. I also found them to be extremely unlikely in the context of the plot: two pioneer women, one physically injured and emotionally abused, the other elderly and none too healthy either, would have had their time and energy consumed with the daily tasks needed for survival. There would have been little or no time for lengthy Bible study or criticism.
The reason I headed this review "Needs a new edition" is that I was thoroughly distracted by the poor punctuation (especially the misuse of apostrophes), and the wrong choices among homonyms. "She poured over the pages" makes me think she watered them like flowers, but "She pored over the pages" would clearly mean she was reading and studying. Where, oh WHERE, is a good copy editor in the modern publishing business? Over all, I'd say this book is worth a look if you can find it in a library or stumble on it like I did in a free pile, but don't waste your money to buy it. |
