More About the Author

Tom Bianchi is one of the most published visual artists and writers in the world.

His nineteen books of photographs, poems, and essays primarily cover the gay male experience in a variety of contexts - from aesthetic philosophy - IN DEFENSE OF BEAUTY - to poetry to erotic photography. He is currently working on an album and stage presentation of some poems being set to song from his book MEN I'VE LOVED.

Tom was born and raised in the suburbs of Chicago. He got a law degree at Northwestern and practiced corporate law for ten years. At thirty -four he left his position as Senior Counsel at Columbia Pictures, tore up his law degree, pasted it into a painting and had his first one man show with Betty Parsons and Carol Dreyfuss in New York. Shortly thereafter, Tom had his first major museum retrospective at the Spoleto Festival in 1984.

In 1990, St. Martins Press published OUT OF THE STUDIO, Tom's groundbreaking book of male nudes, frankly gay and affectionally connected. That book opened a door for more honest visions of gay men and a better understanding of their intimate lives. Thereafter, nineteen of Tom's books have been published, three documentary films about Tom's work have been distributed, and Tom's work has been published in more than thirty anthologies on the male nude. His ON THE COUCH series, DEEP SEX and EROTIC TRIGGERS deal with the expression of conscious sexual energy. This body of work has earned Tom respect as one of the most important artists dealing with erotic imagery and imagination. His body of work is the largest record ever made by a single artist of a culture's intimate life.

Tom also co-founded a biotech company, CytoDyn, developing a new therapy for treatment of HIV / AIDS.

TOMBIANCHI.com is Tom's website that includes detailed information on Tom and his work. Tom writes a blog which is a showcase for new work and the world as he sees it. The posts are fun, witty and sexy. And for people who want to go behind the scenes there is a huge archive of over 20,000 images with weekly updates in the Members Area.

5.0 out of 5 stars A different perspective, February 10, 1999
By
This review is from: Among Women (Hardcover)
I see so many criticisms of this book that the women are to "manly" and it lacks "femininity". Hello people? It doesn't take a genius to see that, and it obviously was not an accident. The book offers a *new* perspective on women and captures aspects of the personalities of these models which may go against the grain of society. Sadly, it seems people miss the point and expect petite feminine models, and walk away dissapointed without them. That's not what these photos are about. These photos are about women full of life, feeling, and their own brand of personality. Bianchi pushes the typical limits and challenges the viewer rather than placating him/her with tired traditional concepts of the female nude.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Book If You Want True Erotica, February 1, 2004
By
This review is from: Among Women (Hardcover)
This book is without a doubt simply one of the best erotica books period. What seperates this book from others is this one simple thing: most of the women are showing true emotion and one of the things that every genuine person absolutely has to have. That one thing is a smile. Even though many of the women are not drop-dead gorgeous, it is obvious that they are enjoying themselves by smiling and putting forth true emotion as well as using postures that are welcoming and inviting. One of the big reasons that Tom Bianchi was able to accomplish this is because he asked many of his female friends to pose for him. There are enough books out there with women who are beautiful and attractive, but they look plastic, like mannequins. The overall best pictures in the book deal with a group called Anti-Gravity. The women in these pictures could hold their own with any of today's well-known models, and in a lot of ways they are better simply because...they're smiling. If you want a truly remarkable book, this one has to be it...period.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's about the women, not about sexiness, July 25, 2002

I believe Bianchi captures women in two ways here -- beauty and love. They're not supermodels (though the "Women of Anti-Gravity" certainly could hold their own against any catwalk strutter or Sports Illustrated swimsuit model), they're simply women. By leaving the viewer to interpret what they see, from women in intimate moments to frolicking with each other to simply being, Bianchi succeeds. I hope he considers making another all-women book soon.
