3.0 out of 5 stars Buen punto de partida

5.0 out of 5 stars In praise of Yellow Love, September 14, 1998
This review is from: Amor Amarillo (Audio CD)
It is only too usual for art to choose sadness as its topic. In Amor Amarillo, Cerati instead sings a celebration of love. With music sweet and solid as a dream that is being lived, these songs envelope you in a creamy, yellow embrace. Even in Avenida Alcorta, which has a more bitter atmosphere ("today I came back tired of speaking about myself"), love is regarded as a redemption, as a shelter: "wherever we are together will be our home". In this CD, Cerati brings the experience of love to the realization itself: Cecilia Amenabar, her wife at that moment, who was expecting their child, sings and plays the bass in some of the songs. Amor Amarillo is a praise of fertility, in every one of its stages. Playing it is like diving in a swimming pool full of sunshine.

4.0 out of 5 stars Adelantado a su epoca, April 7, 2003
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Amor Amarillo (Audio CD)

4.0 out of 5 stars The road is set..., July 20, 2005

This review is from: Amor Amarillo (Audio CD)
Being this the first solo album from the vocal lead of one of the greatest rock Latin American bands, there's not much to do but to listen to it with the expectations that a fan of Soda Stereo should have. What is there to say about it? Praise only.

By listening to this album and analyzing each of the ten tracks included, one of the first things to notice is that the sound has nothing to do with Soda Stereo, which basically means that contrary to what many fans believe, Gustavo Cerati was not the essence of the band but another member.

The lyrics are quite Gustavo's style, if there is something to praise and dignify from this album is the level of experimentation of the music. `Amor amarillo' opens abruptly the album and demonstrates that we are about to listen a new proposal from this magnificent musician. `Lisa' is one of the best moments of this album, the instrumentation and the guitar are provide a weird sensation very ad hoc to the lyrics. `Yo te llevo para que me lleves' (the companion video for this song is equally funny), `Pulsar', `Cabeza de medusa', `Av Alcorta' all have a very experimental sound and are difficult to define musically speaking, which again brings the point of how advanced was Gustavo for his time when this album was recorded in 1993; by listening to this disc you can clearly see certain influences for the following Soda Stereo albums. `Bajan' original from Luis Alberto Spinetta has a very decent homage on the album. `Rombos' is another great song and the music is just unbelievable.

I guess there is nothing else to add. This album presented Gustavo as a great musician and as a visionary, when music suffered from the lack of creativity and commercialism Gustavo came up with this brilliant work, and he continues doing so nowadays. 10 great songs make this record a must for music lovers, especially if you enjoy rock in Spanish, the mixture of rhythms and sounds Cerati created for this album can be listened today and no aging will be perceived, all songs remain as enjoyable as in the beginning.

5.0 out of 5 stars El virtuoso Cerati, August 1, 2002

I apologyze but I'm not able to think in English while I listen to Gustavo Cerati's Amor Amarillo.

4.0 out of 5 stars A rock-en-Español classic that still sounds fresh., October 20, 2001
By
Watujel (San Antonio, Texas) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Amor Amarillo (Audio CD)
"Amor Amarillo" starts off with one of the most instantly memorable guitar hooks I've ever heard. All grinding fuzz and echo, it sets the right tone for the sultry, slightly hallucinatory lyrics of the song. Its melody is in debt to the Classics IV's "Stormy," but Cerati recasts it in a totally different context, with great results.

Cerati has an incredible sense of dynamics and knows how to breathe life into his songs, building them up to an exciting climax, shifting into a new hook when you least expect it, and then letting them fade out, seemingly of their own accord. In addition to the title track, he performs this bit of magic on "Lisa," "Te Llevo Para Que Me Lleves" and "Pulsar."

Having written nearly all of the album's songs, he sounds like he means every word he sings. The synthesizers, most notably on "Pulsar," "Avenida Alcorta," and the trippy "Te Llevo," sweeten the arrangements, meshing surprisingly well with Cerati's guitar riffs.

Hook-filled "Avenida Alcorta" and "Bajan" are the highlights of the second half, with the remainder of the album consisting of listenable but less inspired tracks. But overall, "Amor Amarillo" is full of heart, soul, and sonic gratification. It should be considered essential in any REE fan's collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dos Cualidades, August 20, 2002
This review is from: Amor Amarillo (Audio CD)
Pepper's de The Beatles.

Bueno, Amor amarillo tiene las dos cualidades.
Compralo!

5.0 out of 5 stars Aquí estoy...sin Soda Stereo, December 1, 2001
By
Dave Huber (Delaware, United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Amor Amarillo (Audio CD)
Soda Stereo lead man Gustavo sets out on his own, and an emphatic debut it is! The title track starts us off, and it's vintage Cerati: high-range vocals and jamming guitar arpeggios. "Lisa" is a waltzy, lazy-hazy poem in classic Gustavo style; "Te Llevo Para Que Me Lleves" immediately sets a fast-paced acoustic guitar offering, with Gustavo trading vocals with a female singer; "Pulsar" is extremely enjoyable, with its moody synths and somewhat morose vocals (this, despite the fact that the lead synth line sounds precisely like that which sports teams use when introducing their players before a game!); "Cabeza de Medusa"'s commencement reminds me of Soda's "Lo Que Sangra (La Cúpula)" with its high-powered strumming guitars -- perhaps the only weakness here is that said strumming virtually never ceases from its initial line.

The second half of the disc launches with "Av. Alcorta," and it's a fairly decent way to begin -- a semi-sanguine melody. "Bajan" follows, and it's a straight-forward rocker; "Rombos" witnesses Gustavo back on his synths, complete w/vocoder-ed voice effects. It's a Beatles-esque dawdling melody, and very pleasing at that. The sudden, off-beat guitar pounders catch you off-guard, and then have you nodding your head in approval! Likewise, "Ahora es Nunca" utilizes a synth backdrop to its advantage in a highly pleasurable manner. This was the strength of Soda Stereo: using synths to accent, not overtake, the primary instruments of guitar, bass, and drums. "Ahora es Nunca"'s chord changes are highly gratifying. Lastly, "A Merced" concludes the disc with a lethargic, soothing harmony that will leave you with eyes closed and a smile on your face.
