5.0 out of 5 stars He has done it again with different rythms/beats, July 31, 2003

This review is from: Tu Amor O Tu Desprecio (Audio CD)
I am 24 years old and let me say that I have almost every CD of Marco Anotonio....I love him since his first songs back in the late 70's early 80's. I grew up listening to him at home. This man does have the heart, brains to compose some great songs. You really have to give him a lot of credit...there is very few people that can compose almost every single song on their CDs'. You can never go wrong with any of his CDs...I just don't listen to his music..I really pay attention to his writing, instruments that he uses and you can feel how much love and thought he puts into every song. There is always a song on all of his CDs' that you can identify yourself with. And of course you are always going to have your favorites and like one song more than the other ones. In this new CD....my favorite tracks are #1, 4, 8, 9, and 10. That doesn't mean I don't enjoy his other ones. Since he came out solo in 1996, I thought I was going to be dissapointed because I was thinking he was not going to be the same without the "Bukis." But he has done it once again...and I love it!! It's not that he is better...but it's just different and it's still great. This is his 5th CD as a solo artist and I truly enjoy and love them all. His music is so relaxing, and when you're in love...it's just wondeful to listen to. Since it all comes from his heart, that is why we feel it in our heart also. You just can't scan through it or "just listen". You really have to pay attention, listen to where he is coming from in every song and listen to the lyrics and that is when you'll appreciate his music. Good job Marco Antonio Solis...
... LIke they say "Music doesn't have boundaries"!

5.0 out of 5 stars Q: "Your love or your scorn"? A: Your love!, May 25, 2003

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Tu Amor O Tu Desprecio (Audio CD)
This is a strong and beautifully-balanced selection of Marco Antonio Solís' songs. And he is so smart -- after the hoopla over his "Si no te hubieras ido" on the soundtrack of the Mexican film "Y Tu Mamá Tambien" and the resultant conjecture about "crossover", his latest cd emphasizes the super-romantic traditional ballads, and lilting dance songs, that have long kept him atop the charts throughout Latin America, and in any other region where Latin Americans live. As "Tu Amor o tu desprecio" -- "Your love or your scorn" -- is being released, "el Buki Mayor" (Solís was for many years the lead singer/songwriter for "Los Bukis") is on a tour of the U.S., from whence he will return to perform throughout Mexico, and in other Latin American cities. When you hear this most recent cd, you'll find yourself dancing, and you'll see how Marco Antonio Solís concerts sell out all over the place, from Madison Square Garden to the huge bullrings and cockfighting arenas in Mexico, with such minimal marketing. You'll also want to look for the rest of his cd's, which demonstrate his impressive range as a singer-composer -- who has many awards to his credit, and has provided songs for countless other artists' albums. Try to catch his music videos, which definitely set a standard for high-quality production, and see him in concert if you can: his shows are fabulous, and the mutual admiration between Marco and his public is legendary. Being a teacher, and knowing that in his rare interviews Solís often credits his own teachers back in the Mexican state of Michoacán with teaching him determination, I'll also mention that his music always provides a great incentive, and a fun way, to learn Spanish. The liner notes for this cd provide all the lyrics to the ten songs, and fold out into a nice poster of the "guapíssimo" -- very handsome -- musician.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Great cd from 'El Buki Mayor', June 28, 2003

This review is from: Tu Amor O Tu Desprecio (Audio CD)
If you are looking for something 'musically new' you will find almost naught. Marco Antonio Solis is a 'song' composer not a mere music composer. Marco Antonio Solis new cd is a step back from the orchestral arrangements which he was collaborating with Silvetti; instead he uses mariachi as his second orchestral choice- a panoply to his lyrics. The latter is something he has done before. The only diference 'musically' is an unusual interesting 'brass sound' on some arrangements here and there and the clear tumbao rhythm-he has done caribbean rhythms but not as 'explicit' as in this cd. Solis is more of a composer so his song compositions are still remarkable and convey the strong emotions and romanticism he is known for. The first song is the single that premiered the cd. The second song, Con la Vida Comprada, is the usual ranchera. The third song, El Milagrito, is a mellow banda-norteña song-remember that banda song in the Buki album 'Por Amor a Mi Pueblo'? well, Milagrito, is arranged that way. The latter is a nice insouciant composition. The fourth song is a ballad-ranchera. Ranchera because it uses a mariachi. Que te Quieran Mas que Yo is a love ballad where the author wishes on his love the best: including that she is loved more than what he has done. The fifth song, El Diablito, starts out with an explicit guagancó until a nice a-la Buki keyboard arrangement transforms it very Buki and hence very Mexican. The song is arranged with the famous 3-2 Cuban clave. Furthermore, the song has also that brass sound aforementioned that sounds nice. Diablito is sang in a Juan Luis Guerra style. After the guagancó intro it goes into a mambo that reminds you of the Pedro Fernandez re-make of 'Yo no Fui'-it actually uses that little happy laugh Pedro has throughout.
The sixth song is the regular ranchera : Ni alla donde te Fuiste. The latter has the traditional ranchera-harmonica intro. In the middle, the back up band artist, who speaks in the middle of the song, sounds very remeniscent to Vicente Fernandez' 'Volver, Volver'. The seventh song is a nice andean cumbia.- one of my favorites. I wish the rythm was exploited a bit more. The latter is called Mas que tu Amigo. The eight song, Te me Vas, is also ranchera-like . The ninth song is a bolero-ranchera-ballad. It starts out with a requinto that is also heard throughout the song. I say it is a ranchera because it uses mariachi. It is a ballad because it is not a ranchera rythm and the voice leans towars a ballad. Bolero because of the requinto heard through out. Finally the last song: Las Noches las Hago Dias. The latter is a norteña ranchera. The mariachi singers provide the backing vocals.
This cd is another showcase of 'su majestad'(or Buki Mayor or Marco Antonio Solis) song composition at its best. I still would like him to get back with the Bukis. Why? because his compositions would transcend to another dimension. After all, the saying goes that two heads are better than one.

Mas Que Tu Amigo, #7, was used as one of the main musical themes for the novella "Velo de Novia" and has a very catchy beat and rhythm. I bought the CD for the one cut, but have been pleasantly surprised by the spirit and life of the entire CD.

Tu Amor O Tu Desprecio is the 3rd cd I have bought from Mr. Solis. The guy makes nice cds. Out of the 3 cds I got I have not been dissapointed at all. All 3 I like the whole thing. I did not know Marco Antonio Solis untill 1999. In fact I had never seen what he looked like befor 1999. His new cd is a more mexcian style cd which fits him perfectly because hes mexcian. I am not from mexico. I am from New York. There were no reviews on his new cd and I was worrid that it would be a bad cd because he just did a cd 2 years ago. When I heard the wole cd I was releved. It very nice. Over all its a cd wroth getting for yourself or that special person you love like your wife. Nice cd!!!! 5 stars.

I have been listening to this CD for several weeks and have learned most of the lyrics. I have just in the last year figured out what I was missing not listening to our Mexican neighbor's great music. I bought this CD for "Mas que tu amigo" -la tema de 'Velo de Novia' con Jorge & Andrea, but then the other songs were great as well. They are witty lyrics and well written, & M.A. can really sing too. I don't like Tejano and I'm glad there is not much of that influence on his music. You can improve your Spanish too, because he sings slowly and clearly enough to pick up on pronunciations. Este 'CD' es muy bueno!

5.0 out of 5 stars Marco Marco bueno!, December 8, 2008
As a person that is not fluent in Spanish I discovered Marco's music when he released Si No tu Hubieras Ido in 1999. This haunting song intrigued me to the point that since that time I have almost all of his music. Marco is a phenomenal composer, and song writer. His lyrics are so romantic and full of emotion. I had the pleasure to see him perform live and his strong voice is as mesmerizing live as it is on cd. Te Amo Marco !

This is one of Solis best....but so are his other albums. His voice is rich and expressive; the melodies wonderful; marvelous rhythms. One doesn't need to understand most of the words to enjoy the music of this great artist. AND he writes most of his songs....what a talent !!!!
