1.0 out of 5 stars Decepcionante (y no por la música)

5.0 out of 5 stars This ain't the sort of music that I normally listen to..., May 8, 2001

Every so often, an album comes out that redefines how you listen to music. This is one of those albums. I'll readily admit to an eclectic music collection, but I've never particularly cared for rap or hip-hop. This soundtrack (and in particular, the contributions from Control Machete) has caused me to reexamine my view on the genre. I first became aware of the music from the trailer to the film (still haven't seen it yet), and was so blown away by Control Machete's De Amores Perros which appears in the trailer, that I decided that it would be worth twenty bucks just to own that one song.

Interestingly, while there's a lot of crossing boundaries, it's the music that's farthest away from my usual listening (the hip hop material) that captures my listening the most and that will almost certainly drive my own writing in new directions.

5.0 out of 5 stars Retrato exelente de la pelicula, November 26, 2000

5.0 out of 5 stars Tremendo soundtrack y punto!, December 9, 2001
This review is from: Amores Perros (2000 Film) (Audio CD)

5.0 out of 5 stars Esta Perron..., October 21, 2001

If you haven't seen this movie, see it, if you have seen it, see it again, and then buy the soundtrack/tribute. The soundtrack is great, and since the movie is so strong, you listen to the songs and say "Oh, Nacha Pop, that was playing when..." (If you've seen it, you'll know what I mean, if you haven't, see it so you get it!)I think the tribute ("Musica") disc is a bit better than the soundtrack, in particular, Control Machete (featuring the beautiful and Siren-voiced Ely Guerra.)called "Amores Perros de Perros Amores" I think if the rest of the album was crap, (and its not) this song alone would validate the fact that its almost 24 dollars. That song personafies the whole movie. Another great song is by Moenia (think Depeche Mode, by way of Mexico)called LADO ANIMAL. Deep dark lyrics, and a great quote by "Susana" "Si quieres hacer reir a Dios, cuentale tus planes" Haunting song. By far Amores Perros is the best soundtrack in any language to a movie in a long, long time

5.0 out of 5 stars A great intro to Spanish language music, September 15, 2006
This review is from: Amores Perros (2000 Film) (Audio CD)
I'll never forget seeing the trailer for Amores Perros the first time. The film looked intersting, but the thing that blew me away was the music. Turns out it was Control Machete's "De Amores Perros". I didn't understand a word of it, but I wanted to hear it again and it bounced around in my head for days until I received the CD. I have eclectic music tastes in general, but this CD opened a whole new world of music for me.

The set is divided into two discs. The first contains music from the movie including some snippets of the atmospheric score by Gustavo Santaolalla. The styles veer wildly throughout covering a wide range. There is the remarkable "Si Senor" and "Pesada" by Control Machete. This rap en espanol group absolutely blows my mind. "Senor" is as catchy as can be and "Pesada" has a nice heavy, miltary feel to it. Celia Cruz's "La Vida Es Un Carnival" is a classic salsa track that cannot be denied. There are two solid takes on the pop song "Luchia de Gigantes". Other standout tracks are the featherlight dance cut "Corazon" and new-old style "La Cumbia del Garrote" and "Dame El Poder".

Then there is the second disc! This was my introduction to some of my favorite acts: Julieta Venegas, Cafe Tacuba, and Ely Guerra. "Me Van A Matar" by Venegas is an alt rock track that will appeal to anyone who liked it when Alanis still had some fire in her. Cafe Tacuba starts with the gentle "Avientame" which blends into the more intense and simmering "Dog:God". Ely Guerra contributes the sultry bossa nova "Dime Cuando" (if you like it, go pick up her awesome debut album "Lotofire").

Then, of course, there is Control Machete's incredible "De Perros Amores". This track is unbelievable. It starts with a classical guitar riff. Then Fermin IV lays down these guteral, violent sounding rhymes and then the chorus kicks in and you could almost cry from the beauty of it. Heartrending and I barely understand the language. This is the highpoint of an extremely strong second disc.

Music is universal, so don't worry if you don't speak Spanish. If you are interested in broadening your musical horizons pick this up now. You get all kinds of Spanish language music (and a couple of English tracks). Enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Best RocnEspanol soundtrack, June 10, 2001

Enrique Torres "Rico" (San Diegotitlan, Califas) - See all my reviews

The more I listen to this CD the better it sounds, to the point of being one of my faves for months now. It is just a terrific musical soundtrack although a bit pricey. If you're a fan of rocnEspanol you'll love this cutting edge music tinged with a urban flavor blend of some of the hottest acts in the genre. Conceptually it is double CD with one CD being entirely "Amores Perros" inspired, various versions by various artists on the same theme. Both CD's are excellent and stand alone or fit well together. Let's start with the "theme song", "Lucha de Gigantes" is a superb catchy piece of pop that is soft and melodic and filters through your mind long after the disc has stopped spinning. It is just one of those tunes that lingers and stays with you and you long to hear it again. Nachapop gets under your skin and it is easy to see why it is most assosiated with the film as the theme. Contributions by Control Machete("what if a flower couldn't pollinate and stayed a bud and if I couldn't die and be born again"), Banda Espuela de Oro(Viva Mexico cabrones!) Illya Kuriyaki and the Valderramas give the CD an urban bite that as they snarl and haunt with their hip hop. Musical producer and director Gustavo Santaolalla or GS as he's credited on the CD has assembled a mixture of artists and songs that are memeorable and his own haunting compositions that are instrumentals are short and sweet points between the longer vocal numbers.Celia Cruz contributes a booty shaking salsa number that is well, what can I say, performed as only the queen of salsa can do it, peerless y con sabor. Titan offers a rendition of "Corazon" that is pop sambaesque with a 60's flavor, it's like music for go-go girls in cages to be dancing at carnival. Los del Garrote add a cumbia touch with a song that defies you to sit still and the lyrics have a(viva la pachanga!) long live the festival ambience. The fabulous Cafe Tacuba contribute two songs to the second disc that is the Amores Perros themed disc. Other notable interpreters include Julieta Venegas, Bersuit Vergarabat, Fiebre and Zurdok amongst others. There is nothing but pleasant surprises in this CD with 30 songs that keep your musical attention and expand your interests beyond your hometown or the local border. I highly recommend anyone who wants to know what is happening in alternative latin music to give this a listen. Music that rocks and shocks the traditions, pushing the envelope beyond national boundaries, Amores Perros is a muscial experience for the adventureous audiophile. No te lo pierdes, don't miss this one! BTW the movie is a terrific piece of cinema that was nominated for Best Foreign Film, definitely worth seeing and it enhances the musical experience, great memories live long after the credits say(The End) Fin.

I am probably one of the hugest fans of Amores Perros the movie and when I went to buy the soundtrack, I was as equally impressed with the quality and performances. This 2 disc set combines music from the movie, as well as music inspired by the movie.I really enjoy both cds and there are tracks that stand out on both. On the first cd is the great track "si senor" you can jam to that forever. I also love "Lucha de Gigantes" and of course the classic "Vida es un Carnaval" by the late great reina de salsa, Celia Cruz. As for disc 2, it contains great tracks as well.My two favorites are Cafe Tacuba and Moenia (one of my favorite groups of all time). If you have the movie on dvd, you can see the Cafe Tacuba music video for "muerdeme" I was kind of hoping that the Moenia video would be on there, but it's still awesome nevertheless. So if you're a rock en espanol fan, or you just liked the music on the soundtrack this is an awesome choice.Highly recommneded!!!!!!!!

I went to mexico this summer and saw the movie. Instantly, I loved the everything about it. The soundtrack really brings the movie to life. I bought this CD for my cousin, but didn't have enough money to buy it for myself. Ever since I got back, I've been looking for it every where. I love it, and recommend it to anyone that likes this kind of music.

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredible Variety of Latin American Rock, Top Quality Songs and Artists, January 2, 2009
This review is from: Amores Perros (2000 Film) (Audio CD)
This albums is one of my top 5 Albums of all times. It has one great song after another. The bands in it are part of the best of Latin American Rock. If you've seen the movie I strongly recommend you to see it, it will make you appreciate these songs even more. The theme of the movie goes extremely well with every song. The second album is my favorite one because they are all original songs, not the score, and they are all made with the theme "Amores Perros", what the movie is about, in mind. It's great to see different approaches to this theme by all these incredible bands. Enjoy.
