Book Description

October 1, 1992 5 and upP and up

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 1-3-- A mouse named Amos builds a boat and sets off to sea. In one unfortunate moment, he finds himself cast overboard in the middle of the ocean. As he contemplates his death by drowning, Boris the whale emerges. This Spanish translation is wonderfully told and will be a natural for storytime. The watercolor illustrations capture the emotions of the two very unlikely companions who become best friends.

Review

"A simple, matter-of-fact story about the friendship between a mouse and a whale...Lovely watercolor pictures and a funny, well-written text which presents its plot coincidences in tongue-in-cheek manner fit together admirably in this faintly Aesopian tale."--Starred, School Library Journal

5.0 out of 5 stars A simple tale, with an artfully told message, May 16, 2007
Even a little child can make a difference!

This is one of the most empowering concepts for a young child to grasp. It is the message at the heart of this story.

When Boris the whale saves Amos the mouse from drowning at sea, we are happy to see a creature so big, helping one so little. But later, when the mouse is able to return the favor by saving the beached whale, we cheer him on!

Steig's prose is rich and draws you into the story. He gives us a phosphorescent sea, an immense starry sky, and a mouse's quivering daintiness. Artfully done as well, are his presentation of some very grown-up concepts: having ambitions in life, returning a favor, what happens when we die, and central to the story...having to move on and say goodbye to a dear friend.

My son and I enthusiastically recommend this book!

1.0 out of 5 stars Pretentious and tedious -- kids immediately smell it as false, July 8, 2006
The tedious, self-serving prose in this book reads as though the author loves the sound of his own narative voice WAY too much. His endless, conjunction-addled sentences leave smart kids looking -- aching -- for the POINT. Steig sets up a sweet and caring friendship between a mouse and a whale -- certainly an unlikely pair -- but instead of playing with the natural contrasts there, he overburdens the story with his heavy-handed voice. There is so much focus on despair and helplessness that the story bogs down...and sinks under the weight of Steig's ego.
