4.0 out of 5 stars Sanson's "Amoureuse", November 20, 2000

This review is from: Amoureuse (Audio CD)
I first heard this album in 1974/75 while I was a student in Quebec. This was Veronique Sanson's first album, and my first experience with her music. From the time I first heard it, I was a Sanson fan.

The album starts with "Amoureuse", a song of forbidden love that has been covered by various artists in several different translations and whose music at least may (or may not!) be recognizable by anyone who was around at that time.

Sanson has a unique gift for combining what are often rather sad lyrics with upbeat bouncy music, drawing you into the song, as in "Tout est casse, tout est mort". She also sings songs of happier times and places, such as "Mariavah" and "Bahia".

Among my favourites are "Pour qui" (Who is it for, this flame burning in my heart?) "Besoin de personne" (I needed nobody, when he came into my life".

Included are a couple of very short, almost throw-away songs such as "Pour les Michel" (no words, just humming, to a lovely melody) and "Dis-lui de revenir", which makes its point, but could perhaps have been developed into a longer song.

At only about 25 minutes total length, this album seems short by today's standards but Sanson's work is so well-done that you don't feel short-changed at all, and it's well worth the money, especially for Vero's fans.
