Louisiana needs an update, June 19, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Amphibians and Reptiles of Louisiana (Paperback)
Good text and excellent range maps. Artwork is not very good. Taxonomy is out-dated, and common names are simply wrong. Authors continued to use the tongue-twisting academic (not common) names devised in the first half of the last century, instead of standardized common names in use nationwide since 1978. Publishers should have had the book reviewed by herpetologists of a younger generation. Only book available on Louisiana herps, so use it until a better one comes along.

Great Book, March 19, 2007
This review is from: Amphibians and Reptiles of Louisiana (Paperback)
The Reptiles and Amphibians of Louisiana is a great book with the recreational and professional herpetologist alike. I contend with the previous review that the artwork is exceptional (if you are looking for pictures, I recommend Peterson Field Guide) and the use of scientific names is appropriate for this type of literature. The book also provides important field keys for Louisiana herps, as well as county record maps. However, as stated in the previous review, some of the taxonomy is outdated. However, the taxonomy of many Reptile and Amphibian books are outdated, including the Peterson Field Guide.
