The Choice for Professional Electrical Contractors

The AM-530 True-rms Multimeter is the fully-featured choice for the professional electrical contractor. Measure and verify presence of voltage to connect equipment or to perform repairs, run new wiring, check continuity of electrical connections, identify blown fuses, troubleshoot motors or check transformers. The AM-530 is true-rms sensing to accurately measure voltage on systems affected by harmonics as well as a built-in flashlight to detect wire colors in the dark and non-contact voltage detection.

Packed with Rich Features

The AM-530 multimeter comes with a set of detachable test leads that measure AC/DC current to 10 amps, AC voltage to 750V, DC voltage to 1,000V, resistance to 40 megaohms, capacitance to 4,000 microfarads, frequency to 10 megahertz (MHz), and microamps. The meter comes with a K-type thermocouple probe for measuring temperature. The meter's non-contact voltage detector senses AC voltage without making contact with the circuit. A built-in flashlight allows the user to read component values, detect wire colors and read name tags in dark areas. The microamp reading identifies current changes in flame detector applications. The 4,000 microfarad capacitance rating is for testing run/start capacitors on motors. A liquid crystal display (LCD) shows readings both in digits and on a 41-segment bar graph. The display is backlit for visibility in low light. The relative zero mode stores a reading in memory to use as a zero point for subsequent readings, allowing for quick comparison of readings. The maximum or minimum reading mode displays the highest or lowest reading in a session to track a sudden increase or decrease in readings. The hold function keeps a reading on the display, even after the meter is disconnected. An audible continuity verifies voltage presence, and a diode test detects whether the circuit's diodes work properly. An auto power-off mode turns off the unit after 15 minutes of non-use to conserve battery life, and a low-battery indicator signals when the meter's batteries need to be replaced. The back of the meter has a tilt stand that allows the meter to be propped on a surface for hands-free use. A probe holder on the body of the meter stores probes when not in use. The meter comes with a velcro strap for hanging.

Perfect for Electrical Applications

Installation and troubleshooting of electrical wiring, motor maintenance and installation, analysis and troubleshooting of other electrical loads (electrical heating systems, transformers, light systems).

Strengths:

* All the features you would ever need for general electrical/electronic work
* Very professional appearance and almost perfect build quality
* Large and uncluttered LCD display with manual backlight
* Built-in LED flashlight

Weaknesses:

* Auto-Ranging measurements were slower than expected
* The VoltSense feature doesn't work
* Narrow vertical LCD viewing angle under indoor lighting
* Fold-out meter stand isn't very rugged

Full review:

The overall appearance, build quality, and features of the AM-530 are excellent for a full size multi-meter in the $60-$80 price range. The meter enclosure is very solid with no gaps in any front, side, or back seams. I can twist the case, squeeze it, and bang it around without causing strange bends, pops, or cracks. This meter will hold up well in the tool box and it looks very professional. The AM-530 is light enough at 13.5oz to be carried on the belt or held for extended periods of time. The sides of the meter are rubberized and provide a textured hand grip that makes it easy and comfortable to hold when taking measurements indoors or out. The rubber coating picks up grease and dirt from your hands a little but is easily cleaned with a damp cloth. The case includes two probe clips integral to the back cover that grip the probes firmly with no slipping. There is also a fold-out meter stand for propping the meter up on the workbench. I was a disappointed with the fold-out meter stand. It's very thin and the hinge is not very strong so I suspect it will not last under regular use. The stand is part of the battery cover and if it's missing, changing the battery may be a little harder.

I have a 18 year old Fluke that is starting to fall apart. I don't know if this one will last 18 to 20 years but so far so good. I was happy when I received it that it didn't have the misspelling that is displayed in the picture (contrator). This one has the temp probe which my Fluke did not have and I really appreciate having it. I have worked on a couple of refrigerators since I got the new meter and it comes in handy.

Overall I am pleased with this meter. I will use it in mostly household type of repairs and a little side work so it may not see as much work as an Electrical Contractor would put it through. But for my purposes it seems rugged enough and I like the features.

I paid a few extra bucks to try to get at least an average meter but ran into issues right out of the box. The non contact voltage sensor did not work 75% of the time which makes the NCV useless as it can't be trusted. I saw other reviews say the NCV does not work so I am not going to exchange it as it appears to be a bad design. There is also a small black spot that is loose in the display that slides back and forth. On my job I use a lot of high end Fluke meters but I bought this one for home use to replace a 15 year old $30 Craftsman meter. The response time is slower than expected and slower than my benchmark 15 year old meter as it takes a 3-5 seconds to get a good reading. For checking continuity the slow response is annoying as waiting for the magic "beep" also takes 3-5 seconds. Aside from that I am keeping it as my next option to move up in quality was closer to $100 and I paid just over 1/2 of that.

THIS IS A WELL MADE METER. FEELS SOLID AND EASY TO READ. THE SLOW RESPONSE WHEN READING CAPACITORS IS THE ONLY THING THAT TAKES SOME GETTING USED TO.

My degree and background is in physics (educated, worked and taught in the field). We almost exclusively used Fluke brand multimeters and I was hoping to buy myself one for home use, but I couldn't justify the price. I found this guy for $40 during a lightning sale and it's as good as the Flukes I was trained on for a third the price.

Note: If you're a true professional, don't bother... you'll need the extra features of a high-end multimeter. But for tooling around a shop or home, this is spot on perfect.

The temperature sensor is a welcome feature and the LED light on top helps in dark corners of a build. The leads are quite sturdy and don't appear to suffer from weakening sleeves around the wires. The readout is very easy to see in all but the dimmest light. And the case it comes in is great. It's very much worth the money.

My only complaint is a minor quibble. The stand doesn't lock into place and relies on gravity to maintain balance. That's fine on a flat surface, but I don't always work on a flat surface. Again, minor.

great meter.I wish it it had better test leads though, if you plan on buying this meter buy a separate pair of leads that exposes the tips. Other than that it comes with a case to store it in. Good buy

First just want to say this is a nice multi meter and will meet my needs for a good solid MM for around the house. That said, I ordered this on a Thursday afternoon, standard Prime one-click like 99% of the stuff I order. This morning, not even 18 hours since I placed the order, the meter was here. Just gotta say, Amazon rocks!
