The Amprobe ECB50A circuit breaker finder and cable locator traces a wired connection between a circuit breaker and an outlet, locates energized cables and wires behind walls, and finds a specific wire in a bundle of wires. It is used in industrial and home applications where a circuit feeding an electrical outlet must be turned off or a wire or cable carrying alternating current must be located, repaired, or replaced. The unit comes with a transmitter and a receiver. The transmitter is fitted with a NEMA 5-15 plug and is plugged into an outlet to power the transmitter and to test the outlet. The receiver is held near the suspected path of a cable or wire to trace it. The transmitter emits a coded signal for accurate location of the circuit breaker, wire, or cable. The receiver has a liquid crystal display (LCD) that shows the coded signal when it locates the correct breaker, wire, or cable. A low-battery indicator signals when the meter's batteries need to be replaced. The Amprobe ECB50A circuit breaker finder and cable locator meets International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) safety standard 61010. The transmitter is certified for category III installations up to 300 volts (V) and the receiver is certified for category III installations up to 150V, which covers items used with enclosed building circuit installations (such as service panel parts, branch circuits, and fixed installations that are connected directly to a building's AC power supply). The outlet provides power to the transmitter, and the receiver operates on one 9V battery (included).

Circuit breaker tracers identify and locate the correct circuit breaker for a particular electrical outlet. The tracers usually include a transmitter, which plugs into the outlet that is being tested, and a receiver, which is a handheld device used to identify the proper circuit breaker in the fuse box. The correct circuit breaker is indicated by LED lights. These tracers may have automatic or manual sensitivity adjustment for use on different kinds of circuits. Breaker tracers may also include additional features, like non-contact voltage detection, which allows it to detect the presence of voltage without being plugged in, and the ability to test ground-fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) and arc-fault circuit interrupter (AFCI) protected circuits.

If you bought this product to trace out an outlet or light to it's breaker in the service or breaker panel, it works for that with no problem. If you use it to trace wires like I did, it is very frustrating and probably will not function as you had hoped. I have very, very limited success. Spend $500 for a Greenlee Circuit Seeker if you want to trace wiring. I will not try to explain how it works but email Amprobe before you buy it for tracing wiring. I did after I purchased it.

I bought the "Amprobe ECB50A Circuit Breaker Finder" to trace a circuit break in an older home. Even though the house was wired with BX (metal armored wiring), I expected the tracing signal to show up in the outlets and lights on the same circuit (did not happen). I also expected the signal to show up in the fuse box (also did not happen). The only time I received the trace signal was when the detector was right next to the plug in unit. Overall, a huge disappointment.

I bought this mainly to trace the MCB for my Data Center which is very old and somehow we have lost our electrical cabling layout.

But I get positive signal on most of the MCB's as eventually they are interconnected.

May be it's good to trace power cabling, but to find MCB was not sucessfull.

This product basically works as advertised, I have no problem with that. In my case I bought this specifically to trace dead outlets, which there are about 10 of in the house we just bought. I thought getting this would be ideal to track down the wires and locate the issue for each of the dead outlets.

However what I didn't realize at the time was that this only works on LIVE outlets. The transmitter gets its power from the outlet so if there is no power then there is no signal generated. So for me this is essentially useless.

One thing I did find out was that the receiver can detect a ~10KHz signal sent to headphones for instance. So with my electronic engineering background I think I can build a transmitter that works with batteries. It should basically just be a signal generator coupled to the hot/neutral of the AC line using a couple of isolation capacitors etc. It will block any 60Hz AC but let the 10KHz signal pass into the wires.

So I'm giving this a 4 star rating, because it does work as advertised but ideally the transmitter should have had the option to operate from batteries so that it can be used in dead outlets.
