Fast, Accurate and User-Friendly

The IR-720 Infrared Thermometer’s fast responding circuitry measures temperature every half second (500ms) allowing the unit to precisely pinpoint hot and cold spots including those created by air leaks around windows and doors. The IR-720 is designed to measure temperature quickly and accurately without having to touch the object, including safely verifying oven or grill temperature from a distance. Its 20:1 distance to spot ratio offers best in class accuracy and response time with a temperature measurement range of -26°F to 1922°F or -32°C to 1050°C. The IR-720 measures emitted, reflected and transmitted energy, which is collected and focused onto a detector two times per second for precise accuracy. The meter also has a bright laser pointer to indicate the precise location of measured area

Packed with Advanced Features

The IR-720 determines temperature by measuring emitted, reflected and transmitted energy. The unit allows for the adjustment of the measured energy for different surface types (adjustable emissivity). For precision measurements requiring the highest accuracy, the emissivity can be adjusted to a specific material type. Emissivity is digitally adjustable from 0.10 to 1.00, in increments of 0.01, for testing a variety of materials. A table of emissivity values by material type can be found in the Amprobe manual. The bright, high-contrast backlit LCD display has an eight-second hold for reading temperature, and a low battery indicator to help prevent false readings. The meter also displays maximum, minimum, average, and difference temperature.

A Wide-Range of Applications

The IR-720 is designed for HVAC/R, electrical, industrial maintenance, automotive as well as quality control and fire prevention applications. Check AC units, ventilation, bearings, motors and transformers for overheating, bad electrical connections and fuses in half a second.

Full review:

The Amprobe IR-720 is the best Infrared Thermometer I have used in a long time. What makes this product so useful is its speed and ease of configuration. The IR-720 comes on instantly when the trigger is pulled and delivers an accurate measurement in a fraction of second with updates every second after that. The best thermocouples can take between 3 and 20 seconds to settle into an accurate reading depending on temperature. With the IR-720 all you have to do is point and shoot. The user interface is so simple I did not need to read the manual except to make sure I understood the spot size and the emission factor table. Every option provided on the IR-720 is immediately useful and intuitive. If you haven't used an IR Thermometer before, the IR-720 is the best product to start with in my opinion.

I took measurements on every surface I could find including sheetrock walls, un-insulated steam pipe, 400 Amp 480V 3-Phase busway, 5000 Amp DC stacked copper bus bars, DC and AC switch gear, 120V breakers, stove heating elements, the engine of my car, and orange juice in the refrigerator. Some of these I could get a thermocouple on without a safety risk and measurements were initially accurate to between 5% and 18% of the thermocouple reading.

Style Name: IR-710: 10:1 IR Thermometer Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
In December 2012, I bought a Black & Decker TLD100 Thermal Leak Detector during an Amazon holiday sale and quite like it. So, I was excited to give this IR thermometer a try. Overall, I like this IR thermometer. I like the compact size, the (selectable) laser pointer, and the generally good accuracy. This Amprobe costs nearly twice as much as the B&D that I've been using, though, and I'd like to share with you what I think are the pros, cons, and draws between the two. To cut to the chase, I think it's overall a draw between the two depending on your uses.

Accuracy - Draw
-------------------
At the end of the day, this is the most important thing to me. From my usage, it's a draw between the two units. Pointed at the same surfaces, they read very similar values. That's not saying that they are accurate - merely that they report the same results in my tests. One drawback to both units, although it makes them easier for the homeowner to use, is that neither has an adjustable emissivity. Both models assume a high emissivity. This won't matter for most people's uses, but it's something to consider. For example, I tend to use them to check the temperatures of walls and ceilings. The paint in my house has a fairly high emissivity, so the readings are pretty accurate. (* I added a brief section at the end to discuss emissivity and some other considerations.)

Form Factor - Amprobe Wins
---------------------------------
No question, the IR-710 is a lot more compact and easy to hold/pack than the B&D model. The B&D is a bit clunky. The Amprobe feels really good in the hand and is nice and lightweight.

A great thermometer considering the price I paid for it. It would NOT have been worth it to me to pay double or triple for a higher-end model, although I was considering that at the time of purchase. My worry at the time was that it would be too 'cheap', as I hate tools falling apart under normal use. This trigger thermometer is solidly built and does not feel light or 'knock-off' at all. The infrared light is bright and reading are responsive with the trigger.

It came with a name-brand 9v battery that was fully charged. Bonus.

Here are a few tips to increase measurement accuracy:

- Keep this thermometer at the ambient temperature you will be using it.
- Give it a few minutes to adjust to the temperature outside if you use it out there, etc.
- Get as close as you can, but account a few degrees for the ambient temperature when you must be be further away.

I got this on the Gold Box discount, and it has more than likely paid for itself by now. I own an older home that tends to get drafty and I've been able to find several less-obvious places where additional insulation was needed. It's also come in handy on a few automotive projects as well.

I work as a Process Engineer at a paper mill and this works great for checking overheated motors and bearings as well as checking for hot-spots on our boiler.

I use this primarily for kitchen applications. Works great. Easy to use. This is a really versatile tools given it's temperature range. This is one of those things that once you own it, you find thousands of uses for it... and if you have kids, they'll find thousands more. That said, it's plenty durable too.
