Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 2-4-- The Alden children return , and are now visiting their cousins who live near an amusement park. Once settled in, they all take off for the park , and learn that the merry-go-round horses are very old and valuable. After receiving threatening phone calls warning them to stay away from the park, the children investigate and are lead into a dangerous situation. This is yet another addition to the numerous mysteries by the late author; it will entertain her many fans, and will undoubtedly create new ones.

1.0 out of 5 stars The Amusement Part Mystery (Boxcar Children Mysteries), July 7, 2006
I was very disappointed with this book. It was not written by the original author (Gertrude Chandler Warner) of the series (the last book she wrote was #19). Whoever wrote this book obviously never read any of her books beyond the first one.

In the last book she wrote (#19), the children were almost grown (Henry, the oldest, was in college), but in this book they are 6, 10, 12 and 14 years old again. To make things more annoying, the author of this book references adventures/mysteries that the children encounter when they were older in the books Ms. Warner wrote. The author of these books also has the annoying habit of rehashing to Boxcar Children's origins in each book. Ms. Warner would mention this in passing during her books, but the author of this book (and all those not written by Ms. Warner) seems to feel they need to recap this story at the beginning of every book (using several pages to do it!) I have only read the new books 20-25, but all seem to take place in August and they want you to believe that they haven't had any other adventure that summer.

The last thing that disappointed me with this book and all those not written by Ms. Warner is that girls are not brave at all and the adventures/mysteries seem much scarier (and are I think) as a result.

I do not recommend this book for anyone who has read and enjoyed the original Boxcar Children books written by Gertrude Chandler Warner.

I forget pretty much of this book but I remebered it was the first Boxcar Children book I read and it brought me into liking the Boxcar Children.
