Product Description

Amusings is the first volume of humor by writer Theo May. Here the reader will find tales (Humoresques) with which he has regaled friends and family, including The Belt Story, Confessions of a Basketball Timer, and The Littlest Jingle Bell. Also in the book are various things from his career as a mathematics teacher, including the infamous collection of failed interviews as well as vignettes (Disciplines) of students running amuck in his classes. These culminate in an account of being fired from a college teaching position due to “moral turpitude”. The volume closes with the moving memoir To Build a Fire.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Amusing(s), June 27, 2009
I originally found Ted's writings on his blog. His writings drew me in. He has a great way of looking at the things that have happened in his life and spins the good and the bad into entertaining Tales from Ted.

His beautiful use of the English language is fresh in a time when we often see communications such as "OMG! did U C that?" I found myself re-reading his missives to savor the exacting applications of his word choices. His writings are rich and can be enjoyed many times.

Ted's writings beckoned me. His writings were the impetus for me to start documenting my life in vignettes. I shared a number of them with him through email correspondence. And, I often documented the direct lineage from his essays to why it motivated my topic.

Thanks, Ted, for publishing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Treat yourself!, June 20, 2009
The title "Amusings" should be read A-Musings. Prepare to be amused as Ted May muses on various stages of his life -- student, musician, composer, mathematics teacher, resident at The Boston Home. When you have finished reading this collection of sketches, essays, and stories -- biographical, fictional, speculative, irreverent -- I think you will, as I have, also find yourself unexpectedly moved.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thoughts on Theo's musings, September 13, 2009
By Phyllis "Phyllis B" (Long Island, NY) - See all my reviews
Remember that crazy phone call which turned out to be a wrong number and after you hung up you wanted another opportunity to say something clever? Theo May had that chance and made me laugh while reading all about it. He also had many more job interviews than I and had fun on some of those that he really did not want. You'll love reading all about his interviews, experiences and even the firings just like I did!!

Amusings is a window into the sometimes funny, sometimes crazy, sometimes poignant, but always curious, mind of Theo May. He wrote that he's a half-full kind of guy; I agree and hope that more of his musings become Volume 2 for further glimpses into his thoughts.
