Editorial Reviews

Amy Winehouse - Frank Amy Winehouse's debut album represents her world and her soul, a collision between 21st century London's urban soundscapes, the great jazz voices of the last century, and the emotional experiences of a 19 year old girl with a lot to say. The sound of her voice is the sound of Chicago in the 40's. Winehouse's music is fresh, engaging and irresistable, subtle and charming, funny and so smooth that half her wit passes you by on the first listen. 5.0 out of 5 stars it's good to be number one, April 21, 2007
i can't believe i am the first person to review this 2-cd set! i have already reviewed 'back to black' and 'frank' deserves equal attention.

when i listen to 'frank', which is often these days, i am amazed that winehouse was in her teens when she created the lyrics for this song set. the honesty and economy in 'take the box' and 'in my bed' devastate me the more i listen to them.

the more popular tunes from the disc, which include 'stronger than me' and 'you sent me flying' set winehouse in a neo-soul sound environment that feature such sophisticated chord structures and bass lines that i immediately assumed that they were sampled. i found no trace of additional composer credits and i hope i never do. because songs of this caliber may shut the wags up that think neo-soul and hip hop are dying. they're quite alive and pushing their way to new heights as they reach around the globe for new voices.

and finally, there is that voice! that tough, yet vulnerable, gritty yet satiny sound with the weight and body dark chocolate and deep red wine (it sounds weird but trust me--it's good!).

now 'back to black' ends with a slight anti-climax; not so with 'frank'. there is a three-song set called 'amy amy amy' that is a great little romp over a selection of funky bass lines and pared down brass accents.
