Book Description

Certain to appeal to fans of Janet Evanovich, Jennifer Crusie, and Katie MacAlister, Elise Sax’s hilarious series debut introduces matchmaker-in-training Gladie Burger, who stumbles into a dangerous quagmire of murder and red-hot romance.

Three months has been Gladie Burger’s limit when it comes to staying in one place. That’s why Gladie is more than a little skeptical when her eccentric Grandma Zelda recruits her to the family’s matchmaking business in the quaint small town of Cannes, California. What’s more, Gladie is also highly unqualified, having a terrible track record with romance. Still, Zelda is convinced that her granddaughter has “the gift.” But when the going gets tough, Gladie wonders if this gift has a return policy.

When Zelda’s neighbor drops dead in his kitchen, Gladie is swept into his bizarre family’s drama. Despite warnings from the (distractingly gorgeous) chief of police to steer clear of his investigation, Gladie is out to prove that her neighbor’s death was murder. It’s not too long before she’s in way over her head—with the hunky police chief, a dysfunctional family full of possible killers, and yet another mysterious and handsome man, whose attentions she’s unable to ignore. Gladie is clearly being pursued—either by true love or by a murderer. Who will catch her first?

From Booklist

A madcap plot and zany characters propel Sax’s debut, which launches her Matchmaker series. Gladie Burger, fresh from Los Angeles, is apprenticing for her grandmother Zelda’s matchmaking business in tiny Cannes, California, when the man across the street dies. After meeting his abused wife and sleazy children, Gladie is convinced he was murdered, but handsome police chief Spencer Bolton disagrees since the coroner pronounced natural causes. When she learns the man was a bumbling thief with only one successful heist and his estranged gang members may have been looking for him, Gladie is even more convinced she’s right. She is somewhat distracted, however, by her grandmother’s next-door neighbor, Arthur Holden, who says he’s happy to help her detect. Even when two of the dead man’s gang members turn up slain, Gladie isn’t deterred. She’s convinced the missing money from the successful heist is the key to the neighbor’s death. Fans of laugh-out-loud romantic suspense will enjoy this new author as she joins the ranks of Janet Evanovich, Katie MacAllister, and Jennifer Crusie. --Pat Henshaw

4.0 out of 5 stars I can't wait for the next book in the series February 4, 2013
By Traann
Format:Mass Market Paperback
"An Affair to Dismember" is a laugh out loud, entertaining book from debut author Elise Sax. She introduces us to Gladie Burger, a woman who is training to take over her grandmother Zelda's Matchmaking business although Gladie seems to think she is better cut out to find the murderer of her neighbor who the police do not believe has been murdered.

Gladie interacts with a variety of interesting, crazy and in some cases sexy people in her pursuit of finding out what really happened in the fictional town of Cannes, California where her eccentric grandmother lives and Gladie has moved to. We meet her friends Bridget and Lucy who love to get involved in all Gladie does. Then there is the new neighbor, the sexy Arthur Holden who you never find out what he does for a living and the delicious Chief of Police, Spencer Bolton who is one of the people always coming to Gladies rescue whenever she gets in over her head.

I don't want to repeat what others have written but I do want to say that you will be pulled in to the story and want to meet and become friends with most of the characters in this book. Yes, being a fan of Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum series, I too see the parallels to her stories but I do think it is a compliment to both of them to compare the style. There is enough different though that I can't wait for the next book in the Matchmaker series, "Matchpoint" due out in July 2013, to find out who Gladie will want to spend more time with, Spencer or Arthur (who goes by Holden), and just what is it that Holden does. Will Gladie become the matchmaker grandmother Zelda thinks she is cut out to be or will she keep getting caught up in other peoples "issues" and keep expanding her horizons helping others with their unsolved problems? I guess I will just have to read the next book in the series to find out what happens next.

5.0 out of 5 stars Laugh out loud funny February 2, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
I have to admit that after reading the first few chapters of this book I didn't know if it was for me. It almost seemed as though it was too over the top to be enoyable, I did keep going and I'm so glad I did. This book is so funny and sweet and endearing and somehow on top of all that there is romance, mystery and suspense. The heroine is living with her grandmother learning the family trade (matchmaking) having never graduated from high school or staying in any one job for very long. Sounds like a loser? Not! She's funny, goofy, her hair is a mess, she eats to much junk food, she has crazy friends and she tries to help people which gets her in trouble every time. She has two potential love interests of her own-I'm voting for the police chief-and a mystery to solve. This all sounds like a lot, but the writing in this book is so seamless that it comes together to form a riotous, action filled story that is funny and tender and a great read that I thoroughly recommend.

4.0 out of 5 stars Gladie's great! January 30, 2013
By jrs3155
Format:Mass Market Paperback
I was happy to meet Gladie Burger as she tries out a new town and career after a lifetime of wandering. Staying with her grandma Zelda and learning the matchmaker trade from the ground up would seem easy enough, but crazy neighbors, cute police and a possible murder pave the way for Gladie's madcap adventure. I liked the title, the storyline wasn't too easy to figure out and I will definitely follow Gladie on her next adventure. To say she's like Stephanie Plum is almost unfair. Gladie's her own person, surrounded by some great, zany characters.

5.0 out of 5 stars Flashes of Food and Flesh January 29, 2013
By Marcy
Format:Kindle Edition
Unless you are a huge fan of "Crossing Delancey"; which I am, or swallow in anticipation of watching Patti Stanger do her schtick on Bravo's "The Millionaire Matchmaker"; a show which is as much fun to watch for the silliness of silicon breasts, spray tans and hair extensions as it is for the reality of matchmaking, you probably have not thought much about matchmakers. Matchmakers do exist. Perhaps because they are more prevalent in certain geographic areas and in specific cultures, the familiarity of such a concept is as fantastical as prince charming fairy tales to some. Personally, I connect through culture and geography but not through sovereign authority.

Elise Sax writes a witty and rhythmic story of Zelda the Matchmaker and the heir to the family business, the reluctant Gladie. Zelda, who has spent decades as a self imposed prisoner of her own house, is revered in their small town for her successes as well as for her gift of the third eye. She has the doctor, hairdresser and a bevy or other townies at her disposal to come to her home for necessary personal needs. She affords her home as a welcome sanctuary for a wide variety of groups so that she can participate and keep up with all the gossip and in this way has a working knowledge of those who need her matchmaking services; whether they realize they do or not. But Zelda is also a throwback. She does not have a computer. Her whole business is run off of a mountains of index cards; some decades old. Gladie realizes that an overwhelming percentage of the information needs to be trashed. She is just not certain that her instincts are fresh enough to know which are the ones to keep and which are the ones to discard.

Although set in a small town, this is not Mayberry.

Funny and enjoyable. Interesting characters. Not a very satisfying ending. Clearly waiting for a sequel that I won't especially care about reading.
